It's always fascinating to hear which tracks are held in the highest esteem by the songwriters that have penned a variety of chart-toppers themselves. Ernest recently revealed that John Mayer's ‘Slow Dancing in a Burning Room’ is one of his all-time favourites, and demonstrated his love for the song by sharing his own rendition of the ballad.
The despondent classic appears on Mayer's hugely popular 2006 album, Continuum, which also produced hit tracks such as ‘Gravity’ and ‘Waiting On the World to Change’.
Ernest's rendition stays true to the laid-back, melancholic air of Mayer's version of ‘Slow Dancing in a Burning Room’. Since Ernest posted the clip of him performing the track, followers have been clamouring for the Nashville native to release an official cover of the song.
Whether or not this comes to fruition remains to be seen, but it does seem Ernest has his sights set firmly on his next rollout of releases. After a series of tweets outlining his transition into a “new era of music”, he confirmed that he'd be dropping a brand new single on May 10.
Aptly timed for Mother's Day in the US, the upcoming release, ‘Takes After You’, finds the singer-songwriter paying tribute to his wife as the perfect role model for their son, Ryman. The endearing, introspective track signifies a shift away from the broken-down, heartbroken feel of February's Flower Shops (The Album): Two Dozen Roses.
With Ernest due to join up once again with his good buddy and ‘Flower Shops’ collaborator, Morgan Wallen, as Wallen's 2023 One Night At A Time tour resumes this week, attendees will be wondering whether they may get the chance to see Ernest perform a full-length cover of John Mayer's ‘Slow Dancing in a Burning Room’.
It's certainly not out of the question, given the fact that the ‘Miss That Girl’ crooner has been regularly including a cover of Jelly Roll's Platinum-certified single, ‘Son of a Sinner’, which was co-written with Ernest, in his 2023 setlist so far.
