Ella Langley is opening up about how she always sensed a duet with Miranda Lambert was in the stars, before the duo teamed up to write ‘Choosin’ Texas’, ‘Butterfly Season’ and more.
While chatting at a BMI event, Langley underlines that Lambert was always one of her biggest musical idols, and she felt a “calling” to work with the ‘Tequila Does’ hitmaker.
Langley begins by playfully joking, “Well, I pretty much just harassed Miranda every time I could get the chance. The first couple times, I think I sat down at a BMI award show...The first time we met, Natalie Hemby introduced us, a fellow co-writer of ours, and she just left me at the table with my...icon. I grew up just loving her music, loving what she stood for, how she held herself as a woman and as an artist”.
The Alabama native goes on, “I don't know. I just always felt this calling to work with her in some big way. I don't really know how to explain it other than I just felt that, and I told her”.
Lambert chimes in, “You just grab me by the shoulders, you're like, ‘We're gonna work together!’ I was like, ‘Okay!’ Because, as you can tell, if you know Ella at all, when she sets her mind to something, it's happening. Like, and I'm pretty strong too. But I was like, ‘This girl knows what she wants. I guess we're gonna work together’”.
Lambert continues, “And Luke [Dick] actually, a long, long time, like, before we even really met, had called me and was like, ‘Hey, we need to get in the room with Ella. Like, y'all remind me of each other...I love her voice. I love what she stands for. We've really got to work together’. And so I don't know. All that kind of happened”.
She concludes, “The stars kind of aligned within a year or so. And Luke was like, ‘We got to get in the room’...He pulled me in on their write, which I'm so thankful [for], because y'all already had scheduled [it]...I was like, ‘Hell yeah, I'll be there’. And it worked out”. Lambert amusingly recalls bringing some soup with her, but it didn't go down as well as she'd hoped, “And I brought soup and nobody ate it!”
Now, of course, Langley and Lambert have become close collaborators, penning beloved tracks such as ‘Choosin’ Texas’, ’Butterfly Season’ and ‘Snakeskin Boots’. Langley brought in Lambert as co-producer on Dandelion with Ben West.
It's been touching to see how their relationship has evolved since that fateful meeting at the BMI event, with Lambert going from a hero of Langley's to a good friend and advisor.
The ‘Be Her’ singer-songwriter has opened up on a number of occasions about how she has leaned on female artists like Lambert and Lainey Wilson for guidance when she's been struggling to adjust to the spotlight. Given how ‘Choosin Texas’ has blossomed into the longest-running Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 of all time, maybe Langley's premonition about working with Lambert really was a brush with destiny. Either way, we can't wait to hear what's next from this dynamic duo.
