Since the release of his 2020 album, Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Punchy Songs, Colter Wall fans have been feeding off sonic scraps and tuneful tidbits in the form of the odd single here and there.
Now, though, Colter Wall is rewarding our patience with a brand new single, ‘Evangelina’, being released on Thursday, April 27.
The traditional-leaning Saskatchewan native has performed the Hoyt Axton cover a number of times in the past, and fans have been desperate for him to release his own version of it for months.
It seems they're getting their wish, as Colter Wall confirmed in his Instagram Stories that the song would finally be dropping this week, and it appears we'll be getting a set of accompanying visuals.
Alongside the pre-save links, Colter Wall included a couple of TikTok videos of him performing ‘Evangelina’, which we assume have been taken from the ballad's official music video.
‘Evangelina’ was originally released by US singer-songwriter, Hoyt Axton, in 1976 as part of his much-loved Fearless album. It stays true to Colter Wall's penchant for retro, sepia-tinged portrayals of the American West, and his gravelly, charismatic vocals add a whole new layer of emotion and poignance to the classic track.
This will be Colter Wall's first release since he put out his ‘Cypress Hill and the Big Country’ two-pack of singles in September 2022, and listeners are hoping ‘Evangelina’ is the first indication that a brand new album from the Canadian songsmith is on the horizon.
