Charley Crockett has signed on the dotted line.
Writing a long, personal post to his mailing list last night (January 23), the 'Gulf & Western' singer-songwriter announced that he has inked a deal with major label Island Records, leaving his partnership with Thirty Tigers, which he held under his Son of Davy moniker.
Alongside this, Crockett confirmed that his first album for the label, his 15th studio album in all, would be released in March. Furthermore, Crockett signalled that the album would be called The Lonesome Drifter, with the letter acting as an introduction to the new era for the artist.
"Good morning, friends". Crockett begins in his letter to fans signed up to the mailing list. "I was driving through West Texas yesterday making my way into New Mexico. The big stack trains are a constant presence between Van Horn and El Paso. Those locomotives can seem so peaceful at a distance and yet I’m reminded of their power when I get up close to them.
"I guess I find comfort in knowing that, like me, they’re always moving", Crockett continues. "By the time I got to northern New Mexico the high mountains turned a deep purple and disappeared into night as the diamond lights of Albuquerque grew nearer".
"I’m writing to say thank you for keeping up with me over the years," Crockett writes. "It’s a short story that keeps getting longer. I’m releasing my debut album with Island Records in March. I wanted you to be the first to know. It’s album #15 if we’re keeping score".
"I fell into this troubadour life looking for a way to live on my own terms" Crockett concludes. "I didn’t like the idea of being fenced in, sold off, or played out. That’s why I started riding trains in the first place. Some say time is money. I say time is a train, and I’m running alongside of it on the only highway. It’s my great pleasure to introduce to you “The Lonesome Drifter”.
The letter goes on to link to a teaser trailer, seemingly for the new album, entitled 'CHARLEY CROCKETT IS THE LONESOME DRIFTER'. The video, which you can watch below, features a seemingly unreleased snippet of a new song, with a video of Crockett walking along a barren, desert highway. You can watch the video here.
