Charles Wesley Godwin has built a reputation for staying true to his roots, and his latest cover suggests the West Virginia native won't be changing his approach anytime soon - and, frankly, we're not complaining.

On Thursday, Charles posted a video of him performing a reflective, acoustic rendition of ‘Eighteen Wheels & A Dozen Roses’ by his fellow West Virginian, Kathy Mattea. Charles Wesley Godwin's honeyed vocals wrap Mattea's gentle lyrics in a warm embrace, creating a beautiful retelling of a classic country love story.

The song documents a wife patiently waiting for her husband to return, and flits between both perspectives as the couple dream of finally being able to ride off into the sunset together.

It serves as the latest in a strong repertoire of covers from Charles, which includes ‘Three Wooden Crosses’ by Randy Travis and ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ by John Denver.

Charles has also crafted his own version of ‘Crooked Teeth’, by his 2022 tour-mate, Zach Bryan. Bryan recently name-checked tribute his good buddy in ‘The Greatest Day of My Life’, remarking how “Charles is always better than last week”.

Charles Wesley Godwin's Kathy Matthea cover follows his Truthful Sessions performance of an unreleased song, ‘West of Lonesome’. The track feels perfectly suited to the cold, drawn-in nights of Winter, and fans will be hoping it gets an official release soon.
