The ears of Charles Wesley Godwin fans will have pricked up on Tuesday, as Godwin posted a snippet of an unreleased track on his Instagram page.

A live version of ‘West of Lonesome’ was recorded by Godwin and directed by Draven Riffe as part of the Truthful Sessions series.

Accompanied by a nostalgic, black-and-white video of Godwin performing the track, the song finds the West Virginia singer-songwriter musing about absent love evoking a very present sense of pain.

It treads in similar footsteps to the wistful, acoustic-driven sound of his acclaimed 2021 album, How the Mighty Fall.

The unreleased track features pining lyrics, such as, “And I don't know what can be done/Catching up with you is like trying to touch the sun”.

Charles Wesley Godwin is hot off the heels of a prolific, nationwide tour supporting Zach Bryan. Bryan recently name-checked his tour-mate in one of his latest singles, and has been a long-time champion of his talents (“It rained in Carolina but we played just fine/Charles is always better than last week”).

Fans will be hoping that the end of this year-long tour will mean that Godwin now has time to focus on new music, and that ‘West of Lonesome’ could be the first of many more singles on the horizon.
