Bailey Zimmerman has dropped his brooding, atmospheric new single, ‘Fix'n To Break’.
At first, the new track treads in similar footsteps to the heartbreak anthems that pervaded his 2022 EP, Leave The Light On, but then introduces a note of optimism as Zimmerman pleads with his lover not to give up on their relationship.
The song pivots around the titular question Zimmerman poses to his lover, “Tell me what it is you're thinkin’, shoot me straight / Yeah, I know that I might lose you, but either way / Are we fix’n to break?”
The track progresses towards a more hopeful conclusion, as Zimmerman hangs onto the glimmer of hope that their relationship may still be salvageable (“We've been beat but we ain't broke yet / Got a few loose strings hanging by a thread”).
For the hook, Bailey Zimmerman's trademark gravelly vocals are accompanied by a driving, Hip Hop-inspired beat, as the rising star again leans into the genre-blending concoction that scored him his first Country Radio No. 1 last year with ‘Fall in Love’.
Zimmerman reprises his role as the hopeless romantic on ‘Fix'n To Break’, but the song incorporates some new, atmospheric elements that the singer-songwriter has not experimented with on previous material.
The lyrical structure also feels more intricate, with a running thread of DIY and building imagery (“There ain't much in this house that I can't fix / We been beat, but it ain't broke yet / Got a few loose strings, hangin' by a thread / Honey, I don't know much these hearts got left”).
‘Fix’n To Break’ will undoubtedly amplify the calls from Zimmerman's fanbase for him to release his debut studio album, which is expected to be released later this year.
