Post Malone's father, Rich Post, has always been vocal about his admiration for his son and all his accomplishments, with ‘Papa Post’ - as he's affectionately known by fans - frequently taking to social media to pay tribute to Posty's various career milestones.
In a new video, he reflects on his pride at the man his son - whose real name is Austin Post - has become. The clip was originally recorded during Rich's appearance on Jeremy G. Barker's 90 Proof Wisdom podcast and reposted by a fan-page in honour of Rich's recent kidney surgery, which thankfully seems to have been successful.
Rich begins, “I get asked a lot of the time what does it feel like. It doesn't feel any different than watching your 4-year-old son get his first hit off at T-ball. The pride is the same. You can't manufacture that. You can't make it up. You can't fake it. You can't pretend. And kids know it, you know what I mean?...And you just need to feel it”.
He goes on to stress that he feels his success as a parent doesn't stem from Post's stratospheric accomplishments, rather, it originates from who Post is, “I just want to be part of it and contribute my part, and I'm not a super dad because my son's a world-known musician. I'm a super dad because I'm Austin Post's dad. And everybody can be a super dad, everybody can be a super mom or a super parent”.
During this podcast appearance, Rich goes on to reflect on the advice he offered Austin when he was considering pursuing music, “I always tell the one thing that I'll tell people that I told the kids, when Austin dropped out of college, I just said, I don't really care what you do with your life, as long as what you choose to do with it, you're the best at it that you can be. You want to pick up dog poop for a living? Be the best dog poop picker-upper there is out there. Be the guy that has a neighbour that gets a new puppy, and says, hey, this guy picks up the best dog poop”.
He concludes by praising the sincerity of both Austin and his brother, Mitchell, “Just be that guy, be that person. Be genuine. And Austin's very genuine, Mitchell's very genuine”.
It's a heartwarming clip and one that sheds light on the kind of open-minded and pure-hearted spirit with which Post was able to drop out of college and begin his music career. Now, of course, he's one of the most influential musicians on the planet.
As Post gears up for an eagerly anticipated new album, The Eternal Buzz, which is expected to combine his early trap sound and the country-leaning aesthetic of F-1Trillion, it seems 2027 is already shaping up to be another huge year for the ‘I Had Some Help’ hitmaker. But one thing's endearingly clear from Rich's conversation here - he'll be just as proud of his son whether it sells a million copies, or zero.
