The Background:

Arriving as Track No. 2 on Stella Lefty's debut album, Long Way Home, ‘Whiskey’ finds the ‘Boston’ hitmaker falling in love with a Jack Daniel's-sipping man she meets at the bar.

Given it was first teased around a month ahead of its release, fans had been clamouring for Lefty to drop ‘Whiskey’ long before we were finally able to stream it on August 21st.

The Sound:

’Whiskey’ epitomises Lefty's penchant for blurring the lines between folk and country, with much of the song revolving around a plucky and slightly twangy guitar instrumental coupled with a bright, uptempo drum pattern. But then, Lefty shifts it into slightly more country territory as a banjo drifts in and out of the opening verse.

It's a low-key, understated offering that features one of Lefty's classic earworm hooks, as she serenades her prospective love interest across the warm, cushioning instrumental.

The Meaning:

Over the course of this playful, light-hearted offering, Lefty regales listeners with the story of how she found herself at a bar, having reached “the bottom of the bottle”. As she gets ready to head home, though, she can't help but notice a man settling into the barstool nearby, with our protagonist quipping, “Hell I had a change of plans”.

As she strikes up a conversation, she finds herself getting “tongue-tied” as she falls harder and harder for him. Lefty keeps returning to the fact that he's drinking “whiskey on ice”, with this seemingly trivial detail only adding to the man's appeal.

The proceed to dance the night away, with the couple enchanted by one another. Lefty can't help but notice there's something a little forlorn about her new cowboy, with the ‘I Know I Know’ singer-songwriter reassuring him that she can take his mind off things, “You’re looking like you’re lonely / Come lay that lonely on me”.

“You’re drinking whiskey on ice
The way you talk I’m tongue-tied
There’s something in the neon lights
That’s got me feeling alright, alright
-
I reached the bottom of the bottle
And the night was ‘bout to end
Til you sat down on that barstool
Hell I had a change of plans
-
Didn’t think that it’d be in the cards
To fall for the boy at the bar
-
You’re drinking whiskey on ice
The way you talk I’m tongue-tied
There’s something in the neon lights
That’s got me feeling alright, alright
You’re looking like you’re lonely
Come lay that lonely on me
And even if it’s just for the night
You got me feeling alright, alright
Alright
-
Now you got your hands on me
You sure know your way around
Even though you don’t know me
Bet you wanna right now
-
Didn’t think that it’d be in the stars
But baby, here you are
-
You’re drinking whiskey on ice
The way you talk I’m tongue-tied
There’s something in the neon lights
That’s got me feeling alright, alright
You’re looking like you’re lonely
Come lay that lonely on me
And even if it’s just for the night
You got me feeling alright, alright
Alright
-
Oh
Oh
Mmmm
-
Didn’t think it would be in the cards, no
You’re drinking whiskey on ice
The way you talk I’m tongue-tied
There’s something in the neon lights
That’s got me feeling alright, alright
Alright”“You’re drinking whiskey on ice
The way you talk I’m tongue-tied
There’s something in the neon lights
That’s got me feeling alright, alright
-
I reached the bottom of the bottle
And the night was ‘bout to end
