The Background:
It's often been said that country music is able to tell those toughest stories and convey the most complex, inexpressible emotions in a way that few other genres are able to.
Few songs epitomise this as viscerally as Alan Jackson's ‘Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)’, a vulnerable, raw and yet quietly hopeful meditation on the 9/11 terrorist attacks that took place in New York on September 11th, 2001.
After learning of the devastation on TV, Jackson immediately felt moved to write a song to share how he was feeling, but struggled for weeks. Then, at 4am on Sunday, October 28th, 2001, Jackson woke up and had the melody and a few lines in his head.
He sang them into a digital recorder, and then later that day, when his wife Denise and their children had gone to Sunday School, Jackson completed the rest of the song.
Jackson was reportedly reluctant to release ‘Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)’ at first, due to the ‘Chattahoochee’ hitmaker not wanting to capitalise off a tragedy.
But after playing it for Denise, his producer Keith Stegall and then his label, everyone was unanimous in voicing how this song needed to be released. Jackson debuted it with a now-iconic performance at the 2001 CMA Awards later that same year, with the Georgia native including it on his seminal 2002 album, Drive.
On September 11th, 2026, the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Jackson released a new live version of ‘Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)’, recorded at his Last Call farewell show in Nashville, in honour of those who lost their lives in the attacks.
The Sound:
The pared-down composition of ‘Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)’ mirrors the intricate, introspective mood of the narrative, with Jackson crooning alongside a gentle, undulating acoustic guitar for the vast majority of the song.

As he outlines throughout, the most important thing anyone could do was be loving to their neighbours, as everyone processed and grappled with this pain.

At the time, Jackson explained how he was careful to get the right tone with this ode, “I didn't want to write a patriotic song. And I didn't want it to be vengeful, either. But I didn't want to forget about how I felt and how I knew other people felt that day”.
Around the release of his 2026 live version of ‘Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)’, Jackson reflected on the continued healing impact of the song 25 years later, admitting, “I was so nervous about putting it out. Even after we did, I thought we would perform it for a little while and then it would just go away. I didn’t feel like people would want to keep thinking about that. But ever since, I see people waiting on that song in the crowd…and I know I have to do it for them”.
