No way, no way, no way, no way
No way, no way, no way, no way

Maybe his phone died on a long drive
    Middle of nowhere
Stuck on the side of the road, no service...

The Background

Megan Moroney is officially back, and we're here for everything she's laying down on her third studio album, Cloud 9.

What is apparently her most self-assured project to date, the Am I Okay? follow-up finds the hitmaker using her truest voice, putting to song even her barest of emotions.

“I said this whole album with my chest,” she told Katie Neal of the award-winning Audacy podcast, Katie & Company. “I’m just like, it is what it is. I feel like I know I’ve got the best fans in the world, and they make me confident enough to where they’re going to get behind my songs, and they know that it’s coming from an honest, authentic place. And that just has given me more confidence as a songwriter to not give a crap what people are going to say about it.”

The album's 'Stupid' is evidence of just that, the tongue-in-cheek anthem a hilarious inner monologue that she's letting fly without a care.

The Sound

'Stupid' opens in a wash of trilling riffs, blistering rhythms and shimmering strums, the polished sounds immediately giving life to sharpened country-pop perfection.

The song grows explosive with the chorus, the caustic lyrics fueled by anthemic drums, teasing steel and the growl of scorned strings. For the most part, though, the composition lets the words do the talking – little frills, just lyrics that kill.

The Meaning

"Maybe his phone died on a long drive
Middle of nowhere
Stuck on the side of the road, no service
No way he’d leave me on read for two weeks on purpose
Maybe he’s busy picking flowers
’Cause he knows my birthday’s next month, how sweet
Or he’s taking a shower
Drafting handwritten letters for hours on hours"

At the start of 'Stupid', our beloved MeMo appears to be trying to reach a significant other with no luck. He's not responding, but before she panics, she reasons with herself. What could possibly be keeping him from answering a text or picking up the phone?

His cell probably died, or maybe he's out of reach of service. He could be in the shower or perhaps picking her flowers. He's left her texts unanswered for two weeks, but there's no way his silence means anything other than he's busy. Right?

It surely doesn't mean that she's getting *gulp* ghosted... Right?!

The only solid answer that she's able to come up with by the song's chorus is, by far, the most obvious. He's just plain stupid, but is he THAT stupid?

"He’s a lot bit pretty and a little dumb
He probably couldn’t spell “valedictorian”
And I’ll admit there’s brighter stars in the sky
He speaks before he thinks, like most of the time
But there’s got to be a reason why he isn’t here
With a girl like me, you don’t just disappear
Up and ghost me, he wouldn’t do it
No way, no way a boy’s that stupid"

Besides, at the end of the day, you don't leave someone like Megan Moroney on read. She even rifles through a laundry list of her best qualities, singing: "What’s there to not love? / I’m the whole package / I’m funny and kind and I sing / Plus, I’m humble and most days attractive."

To lose out on a partner like her, there's no way he could be that dumb. So she surmises that something unthinkable has happened to him and she checks the paper to make sure he's not dead or in jail. But again, she comes to the conclusion that he just might not be smart enough to keep a woman like our favorite hitmaker.

"There’s no damn way a boy’s that stupid"

No way, no way, no way, no way
No way, no way, no way, no way

Maybe his phone died on a long drive
Middle of nowhere
Stuck on the side of the road, no service
No way he’d leave me on read for two weeks on purpose
Maybe he’s busy picking flowers
’Cause he knows my birthday’s next month, how sweet
Or he’s taking a shower
Drafting handwritten letters for hours on hours

Surely his silence isn’t him letting me go
And I know he can’t read his watch
I bet that’s why he didn’t show, I know

He’s a lot bit pretty and a little dumb
He probably couldn’t spell “valedictorian”
And I’ll admit there’s brighter stars in the sky
He speaks before he thinks, like most of the time
But there’s got to be a reason why he isn’t here
With a girl like me, you don’t just disappear
Up and ghost me, he wouldn’t do it
No way, no way a boy’s that stupid

What’s there to not love?
I’m the whole package
I’m funny and kind and I sing
Plus, I’m humble and most days attractive
So, no text back must mean something terrible has happened
Surely his silence isn’t him letting me go
So, I check the local paper
Making sure his name ain’t written in bold, I know

He’s a lot bit pretty and a little dumb
(A lot bit pretty)
He probably couldn’t spell “valedictorian”
(Little dumb)
And I’ll admit there’s brighter stars in the sky
He speaks before he thinks, like most of the time
(most of the time)
But there’s got to be a reason why he isn’t here
(He isn’t here)
With a girl like me, you don’t just disappear
Up and ghost me, he wouldn’t do it
No way, no way a boy’s that stupid

No way, he wouldn’t do it
(He wouldn’t do it)
No way, a boy’s that stupid

No way, no way
(No way, no way, no way, no way)
No way, no way
(No way, no way, no way, no way)

He’s a lot bit pretty and a little dumb
He probably couldn’t spell “valedictorian”
And I’ll admit there’s brighter stars in the sky
He speaks before he thinks, like most of the time
(Most of the time)
But there’s got to be a reason why he isn’t here
(He isn’t here)
With a girl like me, you don’t just disappear
(He isn’t here)
Up and ghost me, he wouldn’t do it
There’s no damn way a boy’s that stupid

No way, no way, no way, no way
No way, no way, no way, no way
