The song sees Green turn to the world of rodeo, telling the story of a relationship that came incredibly close to going the distance, but ultimately fell just short.
The title is the key to the whole concept, and if you don’t understand the rules of rodeo, it’s likely going to feel cryptic. In bull-riding, a cowboy has to stay on for eight seconds for the ride to count. Ricky Skaggs once said “In a country band, the music is built around the lead singer.” That feels particularly true of Green. Riley is always at the centre of his songs, with everything from the guitars to the production built around his Alabama drawl and storytelling.

The Meaning:
In ‘Seven Second Ride’, Green tells the story of a relationship that came incredibly close to forever,but ultimately fell just short. Just like the boys in the rodeo.
He carries the rodeo metaphor throughout, describing a lover with whom he had “a hell of a ride” with and holding on tight until life started “bucking” and they could no longer stay together.
Green then reveals just how serious the relationship had become. He already had her father’s blessing and “a ring in my Wrangler jeans”, but never got the chance to get down on one knee. It’s pretty ironic comparing it with the fun and excitement of rodeo, but it works.
Ultimately, the song is about almost making it, but just falling short. So near, and yet so far.
