The Background:
Randy Travis has released the title track off his upcoming album, ‘Same Old Way’, this Friday September 4th. This song holds a special place on the album as it was written by Travis and his longtime friend and producer, Kyle Lehning, marking Lehning’s first major writing credit.
The full album is set for release on November 13th, and is made up of 12 brand new tracks which, following Travis’ stroke in 2013, was never something fans and peers thought would be possible. But Lehning uncovered the music from Travis’ vault and got to work remixing and remastering them, with the country music legend at his side.
Same Old Way will be in our hands 40 years after Travis’ debut album, Storms of Life, was released. The anniversary marks a momentous occasion for both Randy Travis and country music as a whole, bringing back one of the genre's most legendary voices.
The Sound:
‘Same Old Way’ is a smooth, whiskey-tinted, steel-soaked number full of heartbreak. Travis’ inimitable vocals have been recaptured perfectly as they lilt over bluesy guitars and a southern sway.
The Meaning:
Reflecting on a breakup, Travis reflects on his trouble in moving on from his lost love. Not able to “walk away from the best I know”, Travis notes that whatever he tries, he’s faced with memories of her. “Beer and wine, another woman one or two times,” haven’t helped him shake the ache of his broken heart. Well intentioned friends repeat the age old ‘time heals all wounds’ but not for Travis.
Faced with the lingering memory of a love lost, Travis seems to accept his fate of loneliness, reminded daily of the woman he left behind. He’s “not ashamed to say I’m not that strong,” as he contemplates his journey.
The next chapter is unclear. Will he stay in a perpetual state of regret, or will he find the strength to fight for the love that meant so much to him?
