Everything you need to know about the rising star's forlorn new tune, which is featured on his new album, Own Worst Enemy.
Just as much as Gavin Adcock’s new studio album, Own Worst Enemy, is full of raucous anthems and rowdy late night twangers, the 24-track collection also comes fitted with its fair share of heartbroken ballads and desperate odes to loves long-lost.
‘Next To Nothin'’ is among the latter, the tune a bargaining chip to win back the object of his affections. It joins the array of vulnerable and irreverent songs that patchwork his latest album.
Of Own Worst Enemy, which arrived on Aug. 15, the artist has shared, "Over the last 4 years I’ve spent my life writing, traveling, and trying to find time to breathe. It doesn’t always add up on paper like it would seem, but through the happiness, hard times and self destruction I’ve found the best part of my job is letting out music for my fans. I can’t thank y’all enough for sticking with me for this long. I’m the furthest thing from perfect and I don’t ever plan to be."
Here, we are exploring the lovesick side of the often flippant rising star.
From the beginning, 'Next To Nothin'' is blanketed in simple acoustics, consistent strums making way for the addition of a diligent beat and some bright electric flourishes with the arrival of the chorus. Still, those foundational acoustics carry the majority of the song, appropriately telling the story of a love lost and the desperate plea to find it once again.
"Used to wake up in peace, now I wake up in pieces
Used to love you the most, now I love nothing at all
Used to call you my angel, but I'm fighting demons
You still stare at me down through every frame on the wall
And I know that calling this late ain't the right move
And I know I'm lying through my teeth when I tell you"
'Next To Nothin'' sees Adcock in the thick of heartbreak, waking up alone and struggling to come to terms with a relationship's end. He's seeing his former lover everywhere, stitched into the fabric of his everyday life, and it's currently unbearable.
He considers calling them up one more time and letting them know how he feels, but he wouldn't be saying anything he hasn't said before or using lies he hadn't fed them time and time again, like:
"Last time don't have to be the last time / I think maybe we can work this out / Have something better than Kraken and Cheerwine / I'll stay on my side of the couch "
Or fibs like:
"I ain't touched a pill since the day you left / The powder on the counter is a friend of a friend's / If you smell the skunk I think there's one in the yard..."
He may have a hard time being honest about the things he's been doing since their breakup, but he can't deny one glaring truth: he misses his better half. In the song, he confesses: "The only line you know I won't be bluffing / Is without you I'm next to nothing."
"Last time don't have to be the last time
I think maybe we can work this out
Have something better than Kraken and Cheerwine
I'll stay on my side of the couch
And the only line you know I won't be bluffing
Is without you I'm next to nothing
Next to nothing"
Used to wake up in peace, now I wake up in pieces
Used to love you the most, now I love nothing at all
Used to call you my angel, but I'm fighting demons
You still stare at me down through every frame on the wall
And I know that calling this late ain't the right move
And I know I'm lying through my teeth when I tell you
Last time don't have to be the last time
I think maybe we can work this out
Have something better than Kraken and Cheerwine
I'll stay on my side of the couch
And the only line you know I won't be bluffing
Is without you I'm next to nothing
Next to nothing
I ain't touched a pill since the day you left
The powder on the counter is a friend of a friend's
If you smell the skunk I think there's one in the yard
I ain't took this missing you too hard
And I know that calling this late ain't the right move
Last time don't have to be the last time
I think maybe we can work this out
Have something better than Kraken and Cheerwine
I'll stay on my side of the couch
And the only line you know I won't be bluffing
Is without you I'm next to nothing
Last time don't have to be the last time
I think maybe we can work this out
Have something better than Kraken and Cheerwine
I'll stay on my side of the couch
And the only line you know I won't be bluffing
Is without you I'm next to nothing
Next to nothing
Next to nothing
