The Background

Ever since her debut project, Excuse the Mess, Ella Langley has made it a much-loved tradition to finish her projects on an acoustic song or two. On her sophomore album, Dandelion, Langley stays true to this convention, ending on ‘Most Good Things Do’.

It's a simple yet enchanting track that showcases the Alabama native's compelling vocals, with Langley croons gliding softly across nothing more than an acoustic guitar.

The Sound

‘Most Good Things Do’ finds the ‘Choosin‘ Texas’ singer-songwriter singing gently while Charlie Worsham - one of Nashville's most revered guitarists - unfurls an easygoing acoustic riff. Despite not featuring the full-band production of the other tracks on Dandelion, Langley still manages to elevate the hook in ‘Most Good Things Do’ into an infectious earworm. The wistful warmth and peaceful acceptance permeating the song is mirrored in the stripped-back composition.

The Meaning

‘Most Good Things Do’ is peppered with fantastic, visceral imagery, as our narrator describes a flurry of beautiful scenes that remind her of her old flame. From the flutter of a stunning butterfly's wings to the comforting sound of crickets chirping beneath a full moon in her home-state, Langley gives this track a bucolic air.

With every wonderful image she paints, Langley adds with a hint of melancholy that it reminds her of her ex. Our narrator is not sad about this, per se, rather, she just wants her previous partner to know how much he meant to her, and that she is holding onto the happy memories of their time together, rather than the darker ones.

It feels like a natural sequel to ‘Last Call For Us’, on which Langley is aware that a relationship is about to come to an end, yet each person still clearly has love for one another.

On ‘Most Good Things Do’, the protagonist laments the fact that most good things don't last forever, perhaps suggesting that she wishes their story had a different ending.

What has Ella Langley said about ‘Most Good Things Do (Acoustic)’?

During a 2024 interview with Holler, Langley explained why she makes a point of concluding all her projects with one or two acoustic songs - as she does here with ‘Most Good Things Do’, “I'll do that forever...It's just something that I decided to do on my EP, Excuse the Mess, and I just want to keep that going for fans that are coming along and finding my music. These acoustic songs are something for them to look forward to with each record. These are songs that maybe one day I'll cut full band, but right now, I just listened to them on my phone or work tape”.

The Alabama native concluded, “It was just me and acoustic guitar, and I just never wanted to change them. I think lyrically, they deserve to stand on their own like that”.

“Yeah, there’s something about that blue sky

And the wings on a blue butterfly as it flies past my window

Then there I go falling down like a domino

Back where I tend to go

-

To an evening ride through the countryside to a dandelion on Valentine’s

To crickets crying a lullaby underneath the ’Bama moon

It’s hard moving on when it all reminds me of you

Hell to tell the truth

Most good things, most good things do

-

When I think of the things that I miss

Like the breath underneath of a kiss as it floats off into the past

I want it bad so I let the whiskey take me back

-

To an evening ride through the countryside to a dandelion on Valentine’s

To crickets crying a lullaby underneath the ’Bama moon

It’s hard moving on when it all reminds me of you

Hell to tell the truth

Most good things, most good things do

-

Most good things do

Most good things don’t last forever

And too damn soon

When you think of me,I hope it brings you back to

-

To an evening ride through the countryside to a dandelion on Valentine’s

To crickets crying a lullaby underneath the Bama moon

It’s hard moving on when it all reminds me of you

Yeah to tell the truth

Most good things, most good things do

Most good things do”
