The Background

Given how extensively Ella Langley teased ’Low Lights’ ahead of its release as part of her Dandelion album, it's clear the track was always planned to be a key offering on the project.

Back in July 2024, Langley shared an acoustic rendition of the pared-down, romantic ode across socials, and confirmed she co-wrote it with Joybeth Taylor. Langley and Taylor have a storied track record of penning hits, with both having a hand in the former's smash hit, multi-week Billboard Hot 100 No. 1, ‘Choosin’ Texas’.

Then, as fans started to worry that ‘Low Lights’ had been cast aside in favour of newer material, Langley dropped a tantalising clue in the single artwork for ‘Choosin’ Texas’.

Much like how the Alabama native teased ‘Be Her’ on the truck's number-plate in the official ‘Dandelion’ visualiser, Langley subtly included ‘LW LGHTS’ on the back of the car in the ‘Choosin’ Texas‘ cover art. In the middle, you can see a dandelion sprouting up, hinting at what would later be confirmed as the name of Langley's third album.

The Sound

‘Low Lights’ deviates from the classic country blueprint that underpins much of Dandelion, with Langley exploring a more old-school, big-band aesthetic throughout the track.

The ‘you look like you love me’ hitmaker's charismatic drawl is allowed the full spotlight during the first verse, with Langley accompanied by little more than an atmospheric set of keys. Then, as she launches into the chorus, she's met with rousing, swelling strings and an emphatic drum pattern, giving it a distinctly orchestral feel.

The aching tension of the narrative is mirrored as the song reaches its crescendo, with Langley crying out over the intensifying instrumental arrangement. It's a departure from the twang-infused, steel-soaked sound we've come to known and expect from Langley, but that makes ‘Low Lights’ all the more compelling.

The Meaning

Thematically, ‘Low Lights’ arrives relatively early in the Dandelion tracklist, during the portion of the album in which Langley is exploring an on-off relationship that seems destined to implode. The preceding tracks, the will-he-won't-he ‘Choosin’ Texas’ and the self-destructive ‘We Know Us’, set the stage for ‘Low Lights’.

Throughout this song, Langley embodies a protagonist who has grown tired of denying herself and staving off the temptation she feels when she's around a particular man.

There's a plethora of juxtaposition on ‘Low Lights’, epitomised by the line, “I don't want to care what I think when I'm thinkin’ like that”. Usually, the narrator would take a step back and analyse her deep-seated thoughts and desires, perhaps criticising herself for wanting to fall back into his arms. But tonight, she wants to let go.

Then, we get the titular juxtaposition, as the protagonist describes “gettin’ high” in the romantic glow of the “low lights”. As well as literally meaning lights that are turned down low, the phrase ‘Low Lights’ is often used to convey the most regrettable moments in someone's life. For instance, an athlete might look back at their career and divide the biggest moments into highlights and low lights.

As a result, the title implies that, despite determining to ignore her head and go with her heart in the story of ‘Low Lights’, our protagonist knows that the romance will fizzle out.

In a way, the melancholic ambience that permeates ‘Low Lights’ sonically clashes with the simmering passion laced into the narrative. But this accentuates the ominous, foreboding nature of this song, hinting at what's to come for this couple.

“I don't want to know better, I want to be bad

I don't want to care what I think when I'm thinkin’ like that

So tonight, I'm givin’ in, to every temptation I see on your lips

Gettin’ high on you and me, underneath these low lights

-

That smoke ring around you, oughta be a sign

To turn around and walk

But I'm striking up a light

And a little conversation, a little too close

My good's just as gone, as this Jack and Coke

This feeling I could fight

But tonight my hands are tied

-

I don't want to know better, I want to be bad

I don't want to care what I think when I'm thinkin’ like that

So tonight, I'm givin’ in, to every temptation I see on your lips

Gettin’ high on you and me, underneath these low, these low lights

-

Your hands are drivin’ me crazy

Your eyes are drivin’ me crazy

Am I drivin’ you crazy?

Damn, I might be crazy

-

‘Cause I don't want to know better, I want to be bad

I don't want to care what I think when I'm thinkin’ like that

So tonight, I'm givin’ in, to every temptation that there's ever been

Gettin’ high on you and me, underneath these low, these low lights

Yeah, these low lights

Yeah, gettin’ high on you and me, underneath these low, these low lights

-

Oooh, ooh, ooh, yeah, these low lights

Ain't never seen something shine so bright, underneath these low lights”
