The Background

One of the three songs Ella Langley premiered on Theo Von's This Past Weekend a few days before the release, ‘Last Call For Us’ is an unabashedly traditional country waltz.

Arriving on Langley's second album, Dandelion, ‘Last Call For Us’ finds the ‘you look like you love me’ hitmaker admitting defeat as an on-off relationship draws to its conclusion.

The Sound

‘Last Call For Us’ is a wonderfully old-school country waltz, with Langley crooning ruefully across a steel-soaked instrumental. It brings to mind the classic country ballads from the likes of Patsy Cline, with Langley's enchanting drawl and the gravitas of her delivery giving this heartfelt track the emotional weight it deserves.

The Meaning

Throughout ‘Last Call For Us’, the ‘Choosin’ Texas singer-songwriter cleverly uses the metaphor of a final drinks order to represent the imminent end of a relationship. Over the course of the heartbreaking track, our protagonist likens their time together to the moment a bartender declares that it's ‘last call’, i.e. they'll soon stop serving.

It captures the whiskey-soaked, barroom feel of the song, conjuring up an image of Langley and her soon-to-be-ex sat across from one another, drinking in one final moment together before calling it quits. There's a bittersweet ambience to ‘Last Call For Us’, with it being clear that there is love between the couple, but as Langley outlines during the verses, there was simply no way they could make it work.

The lyric “the lights are comin’ on” feels particularly poignant, and could call back to ‘Low Lights’, in which Langley succumbs to the romance and temptation of her on-off lover. The dimmed lights represent the tension and passion between them, so here when “the lights are comin’ on”, it symbolises a dawning, sobering realisation that they simply got swept away by the allure and magic of the evening.

What has Ella Langley said about ‘Last Call For Us’?

When debuting a snippet of the song on Theo Von's This Past Weekend, Langley joked about how ‘Last Call For Us’ isn't as light-hearted as some of her other tracks, “It's not as much fun...If you want fun, not that one...But I mean, I like this song”.

“It's last call for us

The lights are comin’ on

I don't wanna leave, but it's almost three

And I think we both know

That it’s last call for us

It's a sad, sad tune

That after these drinks, you’ll let go of me

And I’ll let go of you

-

We ain’t ever gonna make this work

Let's close it out and go our separate ways

Soon as we go walking out that door

We ain’t ever gonna, ain’t ever gonna be the same

It's last call for us

Might cry a couple tears

We'll both head on home, but this time alone

We won't come back here

-

Yeah it's the last call for us

Last look in your eyes

So baby lean in, ’cause I'll mean it when

You kiss me goodbye

-

We ain’t ever gonna make this work

Let's close it out and go our separate ways

Soon as we go walking out that door

We ain’t ever gonna, ain’t ever gonna be the same

-

Yeah we ain’t ever gonna make this work

Let’s close it out and go our, our separate ways

Soon as we go walking out that door

We ain’t ever gonna, ain’t ever gonna be the same

-

It’s last call for us

The lights are coming on

I don’t wanna leave, but it's almost three and I think we both know

Yeah it’s the last call for us

It’s last call for us

It’s last call for us”
