The Background:

'Hell' ft. Blake Shelton is HARDY in his all-out country boy sound, underpinned by its feature, one of country music’s modern day legends, Shelton.

It's a song that will hit arenas hard and the pair will probably be bringing each other out to sing it for the rest of their careers.

HARDY and Shelton have a long-standing relationship of songwriting together, most famously for Shelton's 'God's Country' that HARDY wrote with Devin Dawson and Jordan Schmidt.

HARDY's EP, Sides, follows his genre-blending, expansive, truly clever ‘Man In The Box’, which signified all of the pillars to HARDY's music. This new era has centered around how he himself does not fit into a box and has a multi-faceted approach to his music. He amalgamates sounds from four cornerstones of his repertoire and each of these are represented together in 'Man In The Box' and as individual tracks on Sides.

The Sound:

The scene is set right off the bat, immediately opening with twangy electric guitars, steel and a kicker of a beat. This is out and out a country song.

Shelton appears in the second verse before they dive into an unapologetically country chorus. The drums get louder, the lyrics are catchy and the guitars break out above the noise.

The Meaning:

'Hell' is all about having a good time being a good 'ole boy.

HARDY and Shelton croon over the classic country tropes; the redneck working man clocking out and hitting the weekend, buying a 12 pack of beer, racing the backroads and cranking up some country songs in the back of the truck, tailgating until the sun comes up.

HARDY talks of being "laid back on the hood like Steve McQueen meets Bo Duke and Bocephus / Whatcha know 'bout Hankin' 'til the break of dawn". Here, he's referencing Hank Williams Jr. who was affectionately named Bocephus by his father, Hank Williams Sr, and Bo Duke, one of the rowdy cousins from the iconic 'Dukes of Hazard'. It creates a clear image of the familiar southern style - trucks, music and a blanket of stars.

He mostly uses the title to reference that they're raising 'hell' but as the song progresses, he talks of still showing up to church and understanding that they are not defined by their faith. Even though they raise hell, it doesn't mean they're sentenced to it on the other side.

"Oh I punched the clock
I flipped the middle
-
Turned up a 90s country hammer with a fiddle
I went to pick me up a sixer at the Citgo,
Ah but sitting right beside it was a 12
Hell
-
I rolled ‘em down
I threw a dip in
I was a freaking bat out of it on a mission
-
I hit the gravel, spinning, giving every piston
Up in this truck you’d have to kill me to sell
Hell
-
Good lord what a good life
Out here with the mosquitos
Laid back on the hood like Steve McQueen meets Bo Duke and Bocephus
Whatcha know ‘bout Hankin’ ‘til the break of dawn
Whatcha know ‘bout smack dab in the middle
Of nowhere, hey y’all whatcha waiting on
Bring your hill billy tail bone let’s raise a little
Hell
Ah hell
Ah hell
-
Come Sunday morning
We’re gonna pay it
We’ll still be back there in the back row
Saying “Amen”
-
Heaven knows we backslide
Sometimes but the truth is
Just ‘cause we gave last night
It don’t mean we’re going to it
Hell
-
Good lord what a good life
Out here with the mosquitos
Laid back on the hood like Steve McQueen meets Bo Duke and Bocephus
Whatcha know ‘bout Hankin’ ‘til the break of dawn
Whatcha know ‘bout smack dab in the middle
Of nowhere, hey y’all whatcha waiting on
Bring your hill billy tail bone let’s raise a little
Hell
Ah hell
-
Hey what’s wrong Blake
Damn man I think hell gave it to me last night
Does your head hurt
Yeah when I start feelin’ better your damn head’s gonna hurt too, man
-
Good lord what a good life
Out here with the mosquitos
Laid back on the hood like Steve McQueen meets Bo Duke and Bocephus
Whatcha know ‘bout Hankin’ ‘til the break of dawn
Whatcha know ‘bout smack dab in the middle
Of nowhere, hey y’all whatcha waiting on
Bring your hill billy tail bone let’s raise a little
Hell
Ah hell
Might as well
Yeah bring your hill billy tail bone let’s raise a little
Hell"
