The Background:
A story that's all too familiar in the US, HARDY's 'Tommy Made The News' explores the impossibly difficult narrative of a school shooting. Handled delicately, HARDY takes his listener on a journey, watching as the fictitious Tommy's day unfolds.
This song captures the quintessential story telling that makes country music so powerful. There are very few writers that could nurture this concept and deliver a heart-stopping song like this.
HARDY's EP, Sides, follows his genre-blending, expansive, truly clever ‘Man In The Box’, which signified all of the pillars to HARDY's music. This new era has centered around how he himself does not fit into a box and has a multi-faceted approach to his music. He amalgamates sounds from four cornerstones of his repertoire and each of these are represented together in 'Man In The Box' and as individual tracks on Sides.
HARDY first performed 'Tommy Made The News' at The Ryman in March, 2026, before its release in October, 2026.
The Sound:
'Tommy Made The News' explores HARDY's masterful singer-songwriter side. The lyrics are most poignant and HARDY's vocals do a lot of the heavy lifting. Accompanied by acoustic guitar and gentle keys, the song starts out delicately, building to a strong back beat by the first chorus. Steel and strings elevate the emotion, highlighted by a choir echoing in the background.
As HARDY hits the most heartbreaking point of the song, the music drops away and leaves him to deliver the line. Its significance is clear and the words hang heavy before the band is brought back in to close out the track.
The Meaning:
'Tommy Made The News' is heartbreaking but not for the reasons you initially think. The song immediately introduces us to our protagonist, Tommy. He's a boy of an undetermined school age having his breakfast, packing his bag and heading out to school. But HARDY says he never comes back. The listener is given the tools to believe that Tommy is a victim of some sort - a kidnapping, maybe? Or perhaps a runaway child.
We're then told that it was just another Monday until 10am when everyone ran and locked their doors. Why? Because the school hallway, presumably Tommy's school, is being showered with bullets. Ah. Yes. It is Tommy's school, because he's been found on the bathroom floor.
The chorus expands on the title, 'Tommy made the news / Heaven sang the blues', suggesting that Tommy is the victim of a school shooting. Heaven is singing the blues because they have received a soul before God's plan intended. At this point, we're grieving for Tommy with his mum and the rest of the town, which also points to one victim that was beloved amongst their community.
HARDY continues with the theme of a life taken too soon, until the line, "thirteen candle light lives on the sidewalk / that Tommy took with him before he took his own".
Tommy is not the victim, but the perpetrator, who opened fire on his school, taking thirteen lives along with his own.
Ending on the line that mirrors the first, "Tommy woke up for school this morning, put everything he needed in his old backpack". When we first heard that line, we assumed that he was packing school books, a pencil case and a lunchbox. The second time we hear it, we know he's referring to the gun.

"Tommy woke up for school this morning
Put everything he needed in his old backpack
Kitchen had a fried egg waiting for him
And then he pulled out the drive just to never come back
-
‘Til 10 a.m. it was just another Monday
‘Til everybody went to running and locking their doors
Hollow points rained like hell in the hallway
And they found Tommy on the bathroom floor
-
Tommy made the news
Heaven sang the blues
Tommy’s momma cried, the whole damn town did too
What a mess the devil made
What a hell to have to go through
Lord ain’t it a shame
Tommy made the news
-
Well Tommy he could have been someone someday
A CPA or a CEO
Husband and a dad and a deacon on Sunday
Ah but thanks to a bullet we’ll never know
We’ll never know ‘cause
-
Tommy made the news
Heaven sang the blues
Tommy’s momma cried, the whole damn town did too
What a mess the devil made
What a hell to have to go through
Lord ain’t it a shame
Tommy made the news, yeah
Tommy made the news
-
There’s little red ribbons on everyone’s mailbox
Signs in the yards saying Wildcat Strong
Thirteen candle light lives on the sidewalk
That Tommy took with him before he took his own
-
Tommy made the news
Heaven sang the blues
And Tommy’s momma cried, the whole damn town did too
What a mess the devil made
What a hell to have to go through
Lord ain’t it a shame
Tommy made the news, yeah
Tommy made the news
-
Tommy woke up for school this morning
Put everything he needed in his old backpack"
