  • Song Convincing
  • Lyrics
I think someone cued the moon, the perfect view
And put the breeze on the water
    You’re just someone I didn’t know, a day ago
    Shouldn’t this be more awkward?
And hell, who just turned on this Etta James song?
This feels way too lights, camera, action...

The Background

Whether she's just been hurt or is working hard at healing, Megan Moroney has never shied away from dissecting her love life in song. With her latest album, Cloud 9, it doesn't seem like she's stopping that anytime soon.

The new release, which dropped on Feb. 20, is littered with songs about heartbreaks and hang ups, ballads for the down-trodden and anthems for those done dirty. But there's one special track in the collection that alludes to an unforgettable encounter with a dream-like stranger that could be more grounded in fact than in the fiction it seems to weave.

Around this time last year, Moroney and fellow country star Riley Green were subject to dating rumors after the pair were found – through fan-scoured social media posts – to be vacationing on the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy at the same time. Not obviously together, just on the same island, at the same time.

While the relationship rumors were never confirmed nor denied, this possible dalliance offers the perfect setting for her new song, 'Convincing', to unfold.

The Sound

The arrangement of 'Convincing' is just as dreamy as the words that play out throughout the song. Subtle acoustic strums and resonant keys kick off the mix before wistful steel wails, powdery drum hits and starry-eyed riffs round out the composition.

All in all, though, 'Convincing' features a simple, ultra-fine sound, but as a commanding ballad, damn, it's convincing.

The Meaning

"I think someone cued the moon, the perfect view
And put the breeze on the water
You’re just someone I didn’t know, a day ago
Shouldn’t this be more awkward?
And hell, who just turned on this Etta James song?
This feels way too lights, camera, action"

In 'Convincing', we meet our leading lady in the middle of a real-life romance. The moon feels like a stage light overhead; the sand, like a dance floor underfoot. The score is set to Etta James, and the atmosphere is perfect, almost as if the breeze was adjusted just in time for this love story to play out.

Briefly, Megan Moroney feels like this moment is almost too good to be true, but she waves that notion away as a moonlit, seaside waltz begins.

"Spin me around, sand as our dance floor
It sure feels like we’ve been here before
Laughing at you, you’re singing to me
Oh, look at us causing a scene
I say, 'This is so dumb'
You say, 'Shut up and kiss me'
We ain’t in love
But damn, we’re convincing"

She's being spun around by a near-stranger, someone she recently met in what appears to be a tropical locale, and suddenly, unspoken feelings begin to arise.

There are mentions of heavy petting, kissing and the occasional whisperings of sweet-nothings. It evokes a foreign feeling within the artist, but it's not one that she immediately shies away from, choosing to live in this impossible moment with a perfect stranger.

As they get closer to one another, what looks a lot like love starts to warp the optics. On the outside, they are very convincing as a couple. On the inside, however, are they also at risk of convincing themselves?

"...And we could just be drunk
But damn, we’re convincing"

I think someone cued the moon, the perfect view
And put the breeze on the water
You’re just someone I didn’t know, a day ago
Shouldn’t this be more awkward?
And hell, who just turned on this Etta James song?
This feels way too lights, camera, action

Spin me around, sand as our dance floor
It sure feels like we’ve been here before
Laughing at you, you’re singing to me
Oh, look at us causing a scene
I say, “This is so dumb”
You say, “Shut up and kiss me”
We ain’t in love
But damn, we’re convincing

We’ve got palm trees wishing we would get a room
We can’t get any closer
And if someone wrote the script and this is it
I’d watch it over and over
And of course then you grin
Say, “I want you” in French
This feels way too lights, camera, action

Spin me around, sand as our dance floor
It sure feels like we’ve been here before
Laughing at you, you’re singing to me
Oh, look at us causing a scene
I say, “This is so dumb”
You say, “Shut up and kiss me”
We ain’t in love
But damn, we’re convincing the waves
Convincing the moon
You barely know me and I barely know you

But just spin me around, sand as our dance floor
It sure feels like we’ve been here before
Laughing at you, you’re singing to me
Oh, look at us causing a scene
I say, “This is so dumb”
You say, “Shut up and kiss me”
We ain’t in love
But damn, we’re convincing

And we could just be drunk
But damn, we’re convincing
