The Background:

No, don't worry, you haven't stumbled into some bizarre alternate reality where Gavin Adcock and Hudson Westbrook are covering a Sia song - this is a different ‘Cheap Thrills’.

Across the rowdy, raucous anthem, Adcock and Westbrook team up for a hedonistic night on the town, with the duo lamenting how they can't seem to stay away from the things they shouldn't - whether it's excessive alcohol, drugs or calling their ex.

They debuted the track together on May 5th at the Grand Ole Opry, with Adcock and Westbrook releasing this keenly anticipated collaboration a few short weeks later.

The Sound:

‘Cheap Thrills’ is powered by a sea of fiery electric guitars and a galvanising set of drums, with the turbo-charged feel of the instrumental mirroring the off-the-rails tone of the narrative.

Adcock and Westbrook's vocals undoubtedly complement once another, with their respective charismatic drawls adding an extra sense of verve to the track - just loose enough to capture the drunken spirit of the song, while still carrying undertones of the deeper sense of melancholy and emptiness they both hint at throughout the track.

The Meaning:

‘Cheap Thrills’ pivots around two protagonists’ destructive impulses, with Adcock and Westbrook admitting throughout the song that they know they shouldn't be drinking until they black out, taking copious amounts of drugs and ringing their old flame.

However, just because they're aware that they have some toxic traits, it doesn't mean they're able to help themselves as they get knee-deep into a wild, hazy bender in the city.

On the surface of things, it's a simply ode to getting a little too crazy and rambunctious during a night out, but the line, “I'm addicted to anything other than love” conveys how, beneath all the careless braggadocio, the narrators are longing for something real, and using alcohol, drugs and a little retail therapy to numb the pain.

“Already know this weed keeps me up at night

Same old thang, just catchin’ a buzz

Called my ex to see if she pick up

It's wrong but it's feelin’ so right

-

Blacked out on the front end of a bender

May act out when it's callin’ my name

Hate how it ends, but I love how it feels

I'm a sucker, yeah, I'm always searchin’ for Cheap Thrills

-

Tell ‘em about that s***, man

-

Might spend rent on retail therapy

Get a hotel, might even get me a suit

Know it's wrong, but it's feelin’ so right

Every time the day turns to night, I'm

-

Blacked out on the front end of a bender

May act out when it's callin’ my name

Hate how it ends, but I love how it feels

I'm a sucker, yeah, I'm always searchin’ for Cheap Thrills

-

I'm addicted to anything other than love

I'ma make me a band and blow it on drugs, yeah

-

Blacked out on the front end of a bender

May act out when it's callin’ my name

Hate how it ends, but I love how it feels

I'm a sucker, yeah, I'm always searchin’ for Cheap Thrills

-

Blacked out on the front end of a bender

May act out when it's callin’ my name (callin’ my name)

Hate how it ends, but I love how it feels

I'm a sucker, yeah, I'm always searchin’ for Cheap Thrills

-

Cheap Thrills

Cheap, Cheap Thrills

Already know this weed keeps me up at night”
