The Background:

On ‘Beach Happy’, taken from Riley Green's 2026 studio album, That's Just Me, the Alabama native channels his inner Jimmy Buffett and Kenny Chesney as he regales listeners with a sun-soaked, beachside ode to getting over a recent break-up.

The song pivots around a play on words of ‘b****’, with Green dropping the punchline at the end of the hook: “I don't want her back, ‘cause there's no making that b**** happy”.

The Sound:

Green helps to build out a carefree, vacation-inspired ambience throughout ‘Beach Happy’, with the ‘I Wish Grandpas Never Died’ singer-songwriter's laidback croons combining with the easygoing strum of the acoustic guitar. The distinctly Gulf and Western instrumental near the end accentuates the Buffett-esque spirit of the track.

The Meaning:

There's a lot of tongue-in-cheek wordplay sprinkled throughout ‘Beach Happy’. Green shifts the meaning of the title from simply being happy on a beach, to then quipping that he doesn't want to get back with his ex, because “there's no making that beach happy”. Of course, Green sings “beach” in a way that could also mean “b****”.

He doubles down on this “b****” double-entendre by referencing how he's much happier playing with his dog than he ever was spending time with his old flame (“Hell, I brought the dog, she’s chasing a ball / She ain’t like her at all, she don’t run off on me”). This feels like a nod to the fact that “b****” is another term for a female dog.

The ‘Beach Happy’ songwriting trio of Randy Montana, Jeremy Stover and Corey Crowder also replaces the classic lyric from Bobby McFerrin's ‘Don't Worry, Be Happy’ with “Don't worry, beach happy”, again highlighting the happy-go-lucky vibe.

The reference to his new Tommy Bahamas sunglasses again adds to the tropically-minded atmosphere, with Tommy Bahama an iconic, much-loved vacation-wear brand. Inevitably, given how the reflection in his sunglasses in a beachside photo last year led to speculation that he was on holiday with Megan Moroney, some listeners might assume this song is about her, much like they did with ‘P.O.S.’. While the jury's out on ‘P.O.S.’, Green is not actually a co-writer on ‘Beach Happy’.

“Drove 5 hours south, set my cooler down

Laid my towel out, and I ain’t moved all day

Guess I’m single again, since I caught her with him, like a sail in the wind, my blues have blown away

Got a lime in my beer, and I’m sitting here

On this beach happy

-

These new Tommy Bahamas

Are blocking out the drama

And I’m the one that’s spending my cash

It could up and start raining

But nobody’s complaining

The sands the only thing on my ass

And I don’t want her back

Cause there’s no making that

Beach happy

-

Hell, I brought the dog, she’s chasing a ball

She ain’t like her at all, she don’t run off on me

And I just saw a seagull land, I’m sunburnt working on a tan

There’s a tiki cover band, I can hear ‘em sing

Don’t worry, naw don’t worry, Beach happy

-

These new Tommy Bahamas

Are blocking out the drama

And I’m the one that’s spending my cash

It could up and start raining

But nobody’s complaining

The sands the only thing on my ass

And I don’t want her back

Cause there’s no making that

Beach happy

-

These new Tommy Bahamas

Are blocking out the drama

And I’m the one that’s spending my cash

It could up and start raining

But nobody’s complaining

The sands the only thing on my ass

She’s just a thing of the past

And this Panama Jack

Sure don’t want her back

Cause there’s no making that

Beach happy”
