The Background:

One of the many stand-out songs from Stella Lefty's debut album, Long Way Home, ‘Ain't Something I Do’ feels like one of the more country-leaning offerings on the project.

Arriving as part of the full album on August 21st, ‘Ain't Something I Do’ continues the overarching narrative of the project, with Lefty sparking up a romance with a new fling in the first couple of songs, before she finds herself falling a little harder than she meant to. ‘Ain't Something I Do’ feels like the turning point for this, laying the foundation for the next song on the album, the ultra-viral ‘Boston’.

The Sound:

For the majority of ‘Ain't Something I Do’, Lefty's bright, distinctive vocals glide across the undulating guitar instrumental, before we get the introduction of some energising drums for the hook. It's more of a subtle, low-key earworm from Lefty, rather than having the immediately catchy melody of ‘Boston’ and ‘I Know Know’, but one that nonetheless plays a pivotal role in the Long Way Home narrative.

The Meaning:

Throughout ‘Ain't Something I Do’, Lefty addresses the guy she's started dating, confessing that usually she'd have found an excuse to leave and call it quits at this stage.

It echoes the sentiment behind songs like ‘Something To Lose’ with Vincent Mason and ‘Good At Leaving’, with Lefty's admissions about having an inclination to run when things start to get serious only accentuating how special this romance is.

She stresses that she wasn't looking for anything long-term when she crossed paths with this man, but he “came right outta the blue”. Lefty underlines that she's falling hard for him, and as the song approaches its conclusion, she again mentions the possibility of leaving, but decides that she wants to stay - an urge that surprises her.

“Coulda been the song they were playing that night
Coulda been the whiskey, coulda been the wine
Could been the way you said “hey nice to meet you”
-
Coulda been the way you grabbed my hand
Poured another drink and said “let’s dance”
Baby you’re making it real damn hard to leave you
-
I’ve been known to run away
Thinking this time I should stay
I, oh I
-
I wasn’t looking for you
You came right outta the blue
Boy I was good before you
So what the hell did you do?
Cause I want you kissing me, missing me
Blushing when you picture me
I, I think I’m falling for you
And that ain’t something I do
Something I do, oh
-
Maybe your lifetime, maybe your year
Maybe your month and you disappear
But I can’t help the way I feel about you
-
Maybe I should try to not think so hard
Biting my tongue, back of your car
Thinking things I don’t say but I’m about to
-
I wasn’t looking for you
You came right outta the blue
Boy I was good before you
So what the hell did you do?
Cause I want you kissing me, missing me
Blushing when you picture me
I, I think I’m falling for you
And that ain’t something I do
Something I do, oh
-
Usually I’m the first one to run away
But you got me thinking maybe I should stay
I don’t know what’s got me feeling this way
Mmm
-
I wasn’t looking for you
You came right outta the blue
Boy I was good before you
So what the hell did you do?
Cause I want you kissing me, missing me
Blushing when you picture me
I, I think I’m falling for you
And that ain’t something I do
Something I do, oh”
