The Background
First teased in early July, Tyler Hubbard thankfully didn't make us wait too long before dropping ‘902180’, a California-inspired heartbreak anthem. The song marks THubb's first solo single since reuniting with Brian Kelley as Florida Georgia Line at CMA Fest.
It finds Hubbard playfully using the iconic Beverly Hills area-code - 90210 - as a way of showing how an old flame did a ‘180’ after suggesting she was ready to settle down in Tennessee. But ultimately, she decided to leave him and return to the Cali sun.
The Sound
Hubbard doubles-down on the retro, disco-inspired aesthetic that permeated his sophomore album, Strong, with the ‘902180’ hook cushioned by synths and a warm guitar riff. The Georgia native's vocals are on-point as always, with Hubbard's sleek drawl coasting along the pop-leaning composition. It's a genre-blurring earworm that seemingly signals the direction of Hubbard's keenly awaited new album.
The Meaning
Hubbard begins by painting a bucolic picture of a Tennessee romance, with the ‘Way Home’ singer-songwriter lulling the listener into a false sense of security. We think he's about to tell us how his love interest was charmed by his rural, country boy roots.
But then we get the plot twist, as Hubbard reveals that, after thinking she was about to settle down in Tennessee, she decided to run back to the sunny shores of California.
He gives us a sense of how this felt like a complete volte-face through the clever titular wordplay. Our protagonist combines the classic Beverly Hills area-code, ‘90210’ - which has inspired a TV series of the same name, as well as a stellar Travis Scott track - with ‘180’, highlighting how his old flame did an about-turn and left him.
