“What would birthdays be without surprises?”
In honour of Kenny Chesney's birthday this week (Thursday, March 26th), we're looking back at the now-iconic moment Taylor Swift surprised the country titan with a special on-stage duet of Chesney's ’Big Star’ during his Big Revival Tour.
On Chesney's 47th birthday in 2015, the ’I Go Back’ hitmaker was headlining Nashville's Bridgestone Arena for the opening night of his sprawling Spring and Summer tour.
Chesney started performing his fan-favourite anthem, ‘Big Star’, which comes during the first portion of his setlist. After delivering the energising first chorus, as he went to start the second verse, another familiar voice suddenly emerged from the wings instead.
While singing, Swift strode out to join her friend, leaving Chesney bemused and grinning in disbelief on-stage. They combined for the rest of the track, with the song-choice feeling apt, given the fact that it charts the rise of a female prodigy who has to overcome swathes of doubters and naysayers on her path to superstardom.
In a later interview, Chesney reflected on the wild experience, “What would birthdays be without surprises? That night, my friend Taylor Swift showed up on my birthday and surprised me, and she walked up on-stage to sing ‘Big Star’ with me, which was ironic because in a lot of ways that song and that lyric is Taylor's journey”.
The ‘Take Her Home’ crooner went on, “She represented that song so well and sang it so great, and it was a really special moment for me and a nice surprise. And I'm glad I get to share that moment - and my birthday present from Taylor - with so many people”.
The duet was captured for us all to enjoy for years down the line, with Chesney and Swift's celebratory version of ‘Big Star’ appearing on the former's Live in No Shoes Nation album.
Chesney joined Swift during her Speak Now tour a few years earlier, with the duo striking up a close friendship after crossing paths in 2007 for what was meant to be a run of dates with Swift opening for Chesney. However, as both artists have since explained, Swift was dropped from the tour shortly before it started, because a beer brand had come on-board as a sponsor, and Swift was a minor at the time.
Swift recalled in her TIME Magazine Person of the Year interview, though, that Chesney got her a gift and wrote a heartfelt message after the disappointing turn of events.
In his 2025 conversation with Jimmy Fallon, Chesney reflected on the incident, “She was a kid...We booked Taylor to go out on the road with us. This was several years ago, obviously. But that summer, my tour was sponsored by a beer company”.
Chesney emphasises that he understood the decision, but it didn't make it any easier to tell Swift, “They came to us right before the tour started, and said, ‘We can't have a minor on the tour’, which makes sense. But I had to call Taylor personally and tell her she couldn't go on tour with me - which now seems absurd, right?”
The ‘Just To Say We Did’ singer-songwriter touched on the full-circle moment he and Swift then had that same year at Nashville's CMA Awards, “So, I called her, told her she couldn't go on the road, but I said, ‘Look, I feel terrible’, because she was going to lose some money, and I gave her a specific amount of money - it was quite a bit of money - because I wanted to make it up to her, right? And that year, later that year, we were both nominated for CMA Entertainer of the Year”.
He warmly gushed, “That's how hot she was. Well, she won. So backstage, I went up to her and gave her a big hug, and I said, ’Congratulations...but give me my money back!’”
Elsewhere during their chat, Chesney outlined that he saw colossal potential in Swift, “I knew she had something. I knew that she was very driven. I knew that she was a really good songwriter...Nobody knows, really, that a person has the ability to really touch the world like Taylor has, and [bring] a lot of people together...Sports and music bring people together more than anything we have, I truly believe that”.
These were enthusiastic, kind-natured sentiments that echoed Chesney's sincere tribute to Swift after she was crowned TIME's 2023 Person of the Year, “Taylor, I knew looking in your eyes that first time on stage with us, you had “it.” The hunger, that something special… A gift not everyone has to connect. It’s been awesome watching you shine! Congratulations on being @TIME’s Person of the Year”.
Chesney concluded his social media post, “I’m glad TIME sees what I’ve always loved about your music, your art and you as a human being. I’m so proud of you and I love you”.
We'd love to see a reunion from Chesney and Swift in the near future, perhaps at Chesney's Sphere Las Vegas residency this summer for another unexpected performance of ‘Big Star’.
Either way, this song captures the spirit of defiance and triumph over criticism that underpins Swift's journey, as well as showcasing Chesney's efforts throughout his career to help elevate up-and-coming female artists via his huge stadium tours, something he has also done with Kelsea Ballerini, Megan Moroney and more.
