Ah, California. The golden west, the land of milk and honey, the cereal bowl of the nation. That sunshine state where the bomb ass hemp be, the state where you never find a dance floor empty and where pimps be on a mission for them greens.
California might not be smack bang at the heart of country music in the same way that it is for hip hop and hair metal, but its contribution to the genre should never be undervalued.
Buck Owens and Merle Haggard brought their Bakersfield twang to the country audiences at a time when the Nashville Sound was filling the country mainstream with 60’s pop strings, and Gram Parsons and Dwight Yoakam made it their spiritual home as they reinvented the genre in the 70s and 80s. Nowadays homegrown artists like Jon Pardi and Molly Tuttle are putting it firmly back on the map.
The Golden State has more than its fair share of country songs sung in its honour too and we’ve collected together 50 of the finest together in our playlist of The Best Country Songs About California.
