Cowboy songs originally came about during the long cattle drives of the late 1800s. As ranch hands drove their herds all the way from Texas to Kansas, stampedes were a constant threat, especially at night, so the cowboys would sing songs to the cattle to soothe them.

When the cowboys came back from the prairies crooning the songs they’d been singing to the cattle out on the plains they paired up with hillbilly music and put the western in Country and Western.

From the singing and yodeling cowboys Jimmie Rodgers, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers in the 1920’s to Cody Johnson and Colter Wall’s real life ranch tales, country singers have been singing about the cowboy way of life for the best part of a hundred years.
