Back in 2021, a brief but mysterious clip emerged on social media of Morgan Wallen singing an infectious hook, with the track being speculatively titled ‘Tired Of It’ by fans.
Morgan and fellow Tennessee artist Moneybagg Yo have been teasing a collaboration for a couple of years, and fans were finally treated to the keenly awaited link-up on June 14th, 2024 when Moneybagg Yo dropped ‘WHISKEY WHISKEY’ - a revamped version of the early demo, ‘Tired Of It’ - as part of his SPEAK NOW album.
The fiery, trap-infused anthem immediately piqued the interest of listeners due to Morgan Wallen's rapped second verse, which features a particularly risqué, alcohol-soaked metaphor.
It's not the first time Morgan has dipped his toes into the Hip Hop world, with the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper collaborating twice with Lil Durk - who also features on Moneybagg Yo's 2024 record - before unexpectedly appearing in Drake's music video for ‘You Broke My Heart’, leaving many to suspect a joint track is on the way. ‘WHISKEY WHISKEY’ consolidates Morgan's status as country music's primary genre-blender, with the Sneedville crooner seamlessly knitting together Nashvillian imagery and lyricism with a distinctly rap-leaning cadence and flow.
Although Moneybagg Yo is the lead artist on ’WHISKEY WHISKEY’, Morgan Wallen takes the helm for the vast majority of the infectious track, delivering a flurry of ferocious, snarling hooks before jumping on the mic for a sleek, witty second verse.
Morgan Wallen's unmistakable, charismatic vocals coalesce with the rattling hi-hats and surging 808s that drive ‘WHISKEY WHISKEY’, while Moneybagg Yo's laid-back, swaggering drawl balances out the energising, electric ambience of Morgan's chorus.
While Morgan Wallen's rapped verse has raised eyebrows for its lyrical content, it shouldn't detract from the captivating penmanship and flow of the lines, with the ‘Thought You Should Know’ singer-songwriter flexing his Hip Hop muscles as he reminds listeners to always expect the unexpected ahead of his hotly anticipated album.
“Another shot, she'll love me again
(Run that back, Turbo)
Haha, make it a double”
‘WHISKEY WHISKEY’ is packed with metaphors and imagery that at times make it seem as though the artists are referring to their exes, and at others come across as directing the lyrics towards their heartbreak liquor of choice. The track is overflowing with double-entendres, making it tricky to decipher whether Moneybagg Yo and Morgan Wallen are serenading their old flames or their current drinks.
The track opens with Moneybagg Yo offering up a fresh spin on the age-old ‘She loves me, she loves me not’ image. However, instead of plucking petals, the rapper is downing shots of whiskey, playfully musing, “Another shot, she'll love me again”. He then asks the bartender to make it a double - if we're continuing the ‘She loves me, she loves me not’ metaphor, then it seems the rapper is hoping instead to land on the ‘She loves me not’ option by asking for a double-shot. Alternatively, perhaps Moneybagg Yo is simply outlining that the drunker he is, the more hopeful he feels about the prospects of resuscitating the relationship. ‘Run that back, Turbo’ is the signature tagline for one of the song's producers, Turbo.
“Whiskey, whiskey, won’t you go away?
Come again some other day
'Cause her memory came out to play
And I'm tired of it, tired of it
I don’t wanna wonder where she been (Where she at?)
She was here, now she gone again (Need her back)
Now it's me and all my whiskey friends
And I'm tired of it (Hey), tired of it (Yeah, speak)”
Morgan Wallen wastes no time by launching straight into the hook, with the ‘Everything I Love’ hitmaker peppering the chorus with a slew of lyrical easter eggs for avid listeners.
The first line, “Whiskey whiskey, won't you go away?” brings to mind the alluring bridge to his If I Know Me fan-favourite, ‘Little Rain’ (“Sun sun, go away / Won't you come again some other day?’, while the lyric “Now it's me and all my whiskey friends” is a less subtle nod to his 2023 One Thing At A Time stand-out, ‘Whiskey Friends’ (“Won't you play a little Whitley for me and my whiskey friends?”).
Morgan Wallen laments the fact that every time he drinks whiskey, it causes the memory of his ex to resurface, before frustratedly proclaiming that he's “tired of it, tired of it”.
While Morgan often utilises a bottle of Jack as a means of getting through heartbreak in his songs, here, he flips the script by accusing the whiskey of being the problem.
“Dark brown skin, caught eye contact while walkin' in (On the walk up)
Perfect timing, get beside me, now we lockin' in (Linked in)
She like, "Tell me how you want it, on the rocks again (What else?)
Lil' salt around the rim (Okay), filled to the top again?" (Let's go)
Fell back, now I'm back in it
Del Dia shots got me sinning
Big racks, but these jeans skinny
Plain Richard Millie square business (Boss)
See me in the club two-steppin’
Diamonds ’round my neck square-dancing
You done made a gangster romantic
Feenin' for your love, I’m an addict (Ayy)
So addicted, ain't nothin' we can do about it (Nah)
Country motherfucker, I say, "What's up?" she say, "Howdy" (Howdy)
Call you my lil’ cowgirl how you ride it like a stallion (Uh, uh)
Don't know why I love it
Can't get tired of it (I'm on you bad)”
Moneybagg Yo incorporates a dizzying number of country references in the first verse, with the ‘DRUNK OFF U’ rapper regaling the listener with the story of how he met his previous partner. He portrays the couple as “two-steppin’” and the diamonds on his necklace as “square-dancing”, both of which are traditionally ‘country’ styles of dance. Despite the song's title, they appear to connect over a margarita, with the woman asking for a “lil' salt around the rim, filled to the top again”.
He name-checks a number of brands as he reels off a flurry of lyrics emphasising how infatuated he is with her, with Moneybagg Yo downing Del Dia tequila before showing off his wealth by describing his luxurious Richard Mille watch.
Moneybagg Yo frames his feelings towards this woman as an obsession, explaining how he's “feening” for her love, a phrase usually associated with addicts and their drugs.
“Put you up and hide you on the shelf, I swear I'm through with you
You so hard to leave alone, it's always something new with you
Ain't no way to get her gone, gone, gone
So I guess I'm gonna tie one on
She's so cold, I had to go and pour you over ice
Way you got me locked down, you'd think whiskey was my wife
You so good, I had to take you home and hit it twice
Two of you gon' keep me up all night”
Ah, the notorious verse.
Morgan Wallen spends these cleverly composed lyrics singing about his relationship with whiskey, but with each line carrying the thinly veiled double-meaning of also being about his ex. The first line, “Put you up and hide you on the shelf, I swear I'm through with you”, is overtly about his bottle of Jack, but could also be interpreted to be about his failing mission to bury the memory of his old flame.
Morgan continues the metaphor into the lyric, “She's so cold, I had to go and pour you over ice”, as he highlights his attempts to extinguish their love via the image of cooling his whiskey. He confirms the double-entendre by describing the drink as his wife.
The infamous lyric arrives at the end of the verse, with Morgan Wallen stretching the euphemism to its limit by crooning, “You so good, I had to take you home and hit it twice / Two of you gon' keep me up all night”. On the surface of things, Morgan is simply outlining how the whiskey was so irresistible that he couldn't stop himself from taking two bottles home, both of which will ruin his sleep.
The underlying sexual connotations of these lyrics are evident to even the most innocent of fans, with Morgan Wallen teasingly inviting the listener to hear the lines as referring to him bringing home two women for a steamy evening, instead of whiskey.
Morgan is yet to comment on ‘WHISKEY WHISKEY’, but Moneybagg Yo has been taking to his socials to emphasise his excitement at having worked with the country megastar, writing, “Whiskey Whiskey Out Now ! Going Crazyyy...U Said We Had 1 Loaf !!”
