Over a century, the Grand Ole Opry has become one of the most hallowed traditions in country music, transforming from a weekly radio barn dance in Nashville into a revered and renowned stage for fans of the genre by and large.
Throughout its 100-year history, the Opry has featured a revolving ensemble of members and performers, ranging from country legends to contemporary stars, as well as songwriters and comedians.
It's first official member, Uncle Jimmy Thompson, was inducted on opening night – November 28, 1925 – and since then, more than 235 artists and performers have followed suit in what's become one of country music's crowning achievements.
Members are selected by Opry management based on critical and commercial success, respect for the history of country music and commitment to appearing on the program.
Up until 1999, Opry membership went into effect upon invitation, but in recent years, an existing member will ask the new inductee to join the Opry Family live on-air and will return at a later date for their formal induction.
Since 1925, 235 acts have held Opry membership and 76 of those are currently active members. Beloved crooner Bill Anderson is the longest-serving active member, as well as the longest-serving member in the show's history, with his induction dating back to 1961. Similarly, late country darling Jeannie Seely earned the title of the show's most frequent performer, notching over 5,300 appearances since her 1967 induction.
In 2024, a quartet of talented individuals joined the folds of the Opry family, including country star Lainey Wilson, who was inducted by Garth Brooks & Trisha Yearwood, forever etching her name among the genre's greatest figures and torchbearers. Also adding their name to the list in 2024 was hitmaker Scotty McCreery, revered vocalist T Graham Brown and Christian artist Steven Curtis Chapman, who serves as the only contemporary Christian artist to earn membership into country music's official family.
In 2025, Steve Earle became the first artist to be inducted that year, invited by fellow Opry member Vince Gill and inducted by country legend and Earle's collaborator, Emmylou Harris. Similarly, Grammy award-winner Kathy Mattea stamped her name in the Opry history books, while simultaneously inviting fellow hitmaker Suzy Bogguss to join the family that same evening. Before the year's end, multi-hyphenate genre bender Jelly Roll received his own invitation from Craig Morgan.
Kicking off 2026, Bogguss celebrated her much-deserved induction with a special presentation from country icon Rebe McEntire.
