When Zach Top cemented his stardom earlier this year with his already well-loved debut, Cold Beer & Country Music, little did we know then that those odes to ale would keep on flowing but alas. His new single is 'Beer for Breakfast', a boozy ballad devoted to cold ones, tall ones, stout ones, really any beer under the sun.
Like much of his catalogue, the new ditty goes down easy and keeps us buzzed on the country crooner. As far as beer songs go, Top can keep 'em coming. We'll stay thirsty for more.
Like the lyrics to 'Beer for Breakfast', the song's arrangement is delightfully straightforward, an unpretentious country composition full of hearty drum hits and sturdy guitar flourishes.
The tune is occasionally peppered with twinkling keys and groaning lap steel, but it is, for the most part, a simple serenade about the beautiful relationship between barley, water, hops and yeast.
It goes down smooth
Puts you in a good mood
Starts your day off right
Helps you make it till noon
Ease on back to work
Yes ma’am and yes sir
Take your break in the truck
Cause your ol’ back hurts
Back home you’ll have to have a few
Just to get you through the evenin’ news
It's no secret what 'Beer for Breakfast' is about, but the song goes much deeper than a little morning brew with your Wheaties. No, Zach Top attests that beer goes with anything at any time of day, devoting an entire song to all the ways he loves a pint.
Just as Sam-I-Am could eat Green Eggs and Ham in a house, with a mouse, or whatever, Top could have beer for breakfast, elevenses, lunch, dinner, supper and so on.
Beer for breakfast
Beer for lunch
Beer for supper
It just ain’t enough
It makes a mighty good nightcap
When your day’s been rough
Aw and in the mornin’ instead of coffee and eggs I’ll have
Beer for breakfast
Top claims there's a beer for everything. Bad day? Beer. Great day? Beer. Mowing the lawn, working on a car, going fishing? You better have a free hand because beer.
Ale can help with what ails you. A cold one can make you feel warm inside. If there's bad news on the TV or a good song coming through the speakers, you can bet your bottom pop-top a beer can make it better.
Top claims beer goes with "fightin’ and lovin’" and "beats anything you can cook in an oven," so trade your morning coffee for something with a little more get-up-and-go. We're having beer for breakfast.
The artist has spoken very plainly about the song, remarking in a statement, “Don’t go looking for some deep message in this song. This is a fun loving, country ass way of lettin people know, if they didn’t already, I like beer!! People have been lovin' this thing on the live shows and I hope they love the single just as much and that it puts them in the mood to pop the top on a cold one and forget about their troubles for a little while!”

Workin’ on baby’s car
Gettin’ your honky-tonk on
To a steel guitar
And if you’re castin’ a line
Got troubles on your mind
It can help any day
Long as it ends in Y
Beer for breakfast
Beer for lunch
Beer for supper
It just ain’t enough
It makes a mighty good nightcap

Beats anything you can cook in an oven

Beer for breakfast
