Released as the lead single from Thomas Rhett's 2024 studio album, About a Woman, ‘Beautiful As You’ sets up the sweet, rose-tinted and romantic ambience of the project. Penned about Rhett's wife of over a decade, Lauren, ‘Beautiful As You’ is the latest in a string of endearingly in-love offerings in TR's expansive catalogue.
‘Beautiful As You’, which was helmed by Sabrina Carpenter, Teddy Swims and One Direction super-producer, Julian Bunetta, wasted no time in surging to the peak of the UK Country Radio Airplay Chart in late June, ultimately spending two weeks at No. 1.
‘Beautiful As You’ features the familiar keys and cushioning drum pattern that combination that drives other Thomas Rhett hits such as ‘Slow Down Summer’, giving the track a warm, atmospheric feel. TR's emotive delivery ensures ‘Beautiful As You’ is pervaded by a sense of humility and sincerity, rather than coming across as twee.
The track nimbly walks the line between nostalgic country-pop and Rhett's forward-facing, R&B-incorporating sound, which can also be seen on ‘After All The Bars Are Closed’.
“Baby girl, you out your mind, you’re way too good for me
Thinkin’ ‘bout the day we met, you coulda just ignored me
Here I am, layin’ next to you, lookin’ extra cute in the morning
Lookin’ back all through the past, everything before you was boring”
At its heart, ‘Beautiful As You’ is about a man who counts his lucky stars that he somehow - to his own bemusement - managed to end up with the woman of his dreams as his wife. Thomas Rhett looks across at a bleary-eyed Lauren in the morning - perhaps the time when we might think we're at our least attractive - and all he can think about is how great she looks. He dismisses his life before meeting her as ‘boring’, underlining how she came in and turned his world on its head.
“You’re the type, people wishin’ they’d sit next to on a flight
Top the list who I wanna wash up on a island with
You’re the dream, even if we countin’ girls in magazines
It’s still a mystery”
Thomas Rhett charmingly bestows one of the highest possible forms of praise upon Lauren: he describes her as someone that people want to “sit next to on a flight”. Most passengers don't want to sit next to anyone when flying, so to actively seek to take the seat next to someone is saying a lot about the character of that person.
Thomas Rhett doubles down on these light-hearted, playful compliments by emphasising that, if he had to be ship-wrecked on a desert island with anyone, he'd want it to be her.
“What’s someone as beautiful as you
Doing ridin’ round with someone like me
I swear it, girl, you could have anyone you choose
I should stop asking questions ‘fore you get up and leave”
What’s someone as beautiful as you
Doing waking up with someone like me
Ain’t gonna lie, you could have anyone you choose
I should stop asking questions ‘fore you get up and leave”
TR modestly scratches his head as he expresses his disbelief at being blessed with his dream partner, before joking that he should stop questioning his good fortune, in case he makes Lauren realise that she's too good for him and in turn cause her to take off.
“How someone as beautiful as you could just fall out of the blue
When you’re walkin’ round in my sweater girl, there’s no better view
Spend the rest of forever just treasuring you
Oh, I follow you wherever, you know that’s the truth, yeah”
Again, the ‘Vacation’ hitmaker chooses to toast the little things about his wife that bring him joy, with TR stressing how happy he feels when he sees Lauren wearing his sweater.
“I just had to let you know know, yeah yeah
I could never let you go go, yeah yeah
Oh, I just had to let you know know, yeah yeah
I could never let you go go, yeah yeah”
Thomas Rhett emphasises that he wants to spend forever with Lauren, with the bearded crooner underlining that he couldn't help but humbly voice his feelings of both surprise and euphoria at the prospect of being the man that Lauren chose to marry.
Via a press release ahead of the song's arrival, Thomas Rhett heartwarmingly touched on how his wife, Lauren, inspired ‘Beautiful As You’, and indeed the album as a whole, “There was one day a couple years back when I was looking at my wife, and I was like, ‘Why in the world did you choose me?’ I get to be with someone who could easily be on the cover of a magazine, and I get to see her in all her forms - a partner, a mother, a friend, even a philanthropist. I just feel like I've got a first row seat at almost-perfection, if you will. And like the song says, ‘Seriously, what is somebody as amazing as you doing with somebody like me?’"
