While chatting to Matthew McConaughey about his brand new EP, Young Manhood & Other Donatable Organs, Zach Bryan gets candid about his walk with faith, and reflects on how he has recently embraced Catholicism thanks to his wife, Samantha.

When McConaughey asks Bryan where he's currently at in his faith journey, he muses, “I've always weirdly had God at the centre of everything from the time I was 15 onwards. I've seen God in everything. Like in ‘Burn, Burn, Burn’ I say I see God in everything. Trees and pain and nights and spring. I want to say I try to live like that”.

Bryan goes on to credit his wife with offering him a fascinating insight into a different form of Christianity, “But Samantha introducing Catholicism in my life was very interesting. Samantha started bringing me to mass and I was always so confused. Like why are they swinging that f***ing smoky thing around?...Why do we have to get up and down so much?...What is this chant? This is kind of weird”.

He outlines how, the more he learned, the more he warmed to Catholicism, with the couple incorporating prayer into their day-to-day lives, “I started reading into it and I started really enjoying it. We started going to mass. We pray for a lot of our meals and we pray together a lot, but it's never ever like overstated. It's very subtle”.

Elsewhere in the conversation, the Oklahoma native recalls enjoying being a part of a contemporary-leaning church during his teenage years. He then shares how the loss of his mother when he was 20 sparked a renewed interest in the church, “If you lose someone, too, it's possible not to think there's a religion, there's no religion. Then, they're gone forever. And you can ride on that for a little bit, but then you start to think like, oh, do I only believe in God because I lost someone? Then you really start looking into it and you start thinking about it”.

The ‘Something in the Orange’ hitmaker makes it clear where he now stands, emphasising that he thinks there is more waiting for us when we leave this earth, “I just really don't believe that there's an end to consciousness. And I really think through all the coincidences in this life, and all the things you go through, and all the adversity you get through, and how beautiful it is that we're talking right here, and how beautiful marriages are, and how beautiful the birth of your first child is”.

Bryan smiles warmly as he admits that he sees so much beauty in this life that it feels impossible for this to be explained away purely by science and reason, without a spiritual element, “You can talk about science all day long, but...there's something”.

And you can undoubtedly hear this sense of deep reverence and the spiritual lens through which Bryan views the world. Aside from on ‘Burn, Burn Burn’, the ‘Lodi When’ crooner offers fans a subtle but clear insight into how faith underpins his outlook on life on powerful offerings like ‘Godspeed’, ‘Boys of Faith’ and even ‘Revival’. As Catholicism becomes a bigger part of Bryan's life with Samantha, it'll be interesting to see whether this increasingly makes its way into his music.
