“Warm Winters Are Rough On Them”: Morgan Wallen and Mark Drury Discuss Seasonal Deer Hunting in New Drury Outdoors Video

Drury Outdoors have shared the full video from Morgan Wallen and Mark Drury's 2026 hunting trip, which took place in January. In the video, Wallen picks Drury's brain, as the ‘Last Night’ hitmaker attempts to secure a large eight-point buck.

After struggling with the conditions, due a layer of fog and mist settling across the farm where they're planning to hunt, Wallen and Drury decide to pack up for the morning and try again in the afternoon. They have better luck this time around, with Wallen joking about the heat, “Starting the movement. It's a little warm, but you never know. I'm sweating. I don't personally want to move, I bet they don't either”.

While they're in the deer-stand, Drury shares some wisdom about why warmer winters are better for hunting, despite the assumption that cold weather forces deer to come out more.

Drury explains, “Warm winters are rough on them. Rough rough”, with the Sneedville singer-songwriter responding, “Why does warm [weather] make them rut longer?”

Drury outlines, “It was not just rut, but just move more and look more, walk more. Cold weather shuts them down, almost like a hibernation. Like when the temperatures get really cold, they just shut down daylight activity and activity in general”.

The founder of Drury Outdoors goes on, “And then you get these warm days, these warm winters, and you got mud, which increases infections in their legs, hoof rot, etc. And it increases activity, and they then literally will walk themselves to death. So, it's counterintuitive, but you actually want colder winters to shut them down and stop that movement. Even an average winter would do it”.

Wallen admits, “I thought you wanted it to be cold for them to move”, with Drury replying, “Yes, to a food source”. Wallen then clocks that, despite the cold weather encouraging the deer to move more during the day to get food, they're ultimately just going to their food source and then heading back to their resting place. Whereas, in warmer winters, they're more likely to move about freely during the day.

Wallen has often shared his love of hunting with fans, with numerous songs in his discography touching on this past-time, such as ‘I Wrote The Book’ and ‘Skoal, Chevy, and Browning’. He cites these days in the woods as much-needed respite from his life on the road, and this marks Wallen's second hunting trip with Drury. Wallen's fellow artist and friend, Luke Combs, joined Drury this year, too.

With his fellow artists - like HARDY - revealing that they often find inspiration strikes more lucidly when they're away from a writing room and instead in a deer-stand, we're hoping Wallen's latest Drury Outdoors expedition sparked some new song ideas.

Wallen is currently gearing up for his keenly anticipated I'm the Problem follow-up project, which is expected to revolve around the ‘865’ crooner's latest single, ‘Been By Now’.
