In a heartwarming interview, Tim McGraw reveals that the first time he saw his now-wife, Faith Hill, the ‘Humble and Kind’ hitmaker immediately thought she was “so out of my league”.
McGraw spoke to Cowboys & Indians about the origin of his romance with Hill, with the duo becoming one of the most beloved country music power-couples of the past thirty years.
During that conversation, which took place around ten years after they got married in 1996, McGraw recalls seeing Hill for the first time, “I’ll never forget when I first saw her. No words could describe how I felt. I thought, ‘She’s so out of my league’. I couldn’t imagine she’d ever speak to me, much less date me and end up marrying me”.
He goes on to share how, while on the Spontaneous Combustion run together, the couple fell in love and tied the knot in a surprise ceremony during the tour, “After a couple of months, we knew we really liked each other. In eight months, we were married”.
McGraw has never been afraid to admit that he didn't feel he deserved Hill when they first met, and even in his recent anniversary tribute to her, the Louisiana native underlines how “fortunate” he feels to have met the love of his life all those years ago.
Via a heartfelt Instagram post, McGraw shared a video montage of the couple over the years and endearingly gushed in the caption, “In front of our closest family and friends, I was bound to the most beautiful soul. A lady that was glowing in my eyes, expanding my heart, and giving me all the love she had. I was and still am bewildered by her capacity to love, forgive, nurture and be full of joy and laughter”.
He fondly added, “She is a gift to the world for sure, however, for us, we get Her, all of her. And I (and my girls) know who is ours, completely. It’s difficult to describe what she means, she is the center of gravity to my life and our girls lives and anyone who knows Audrey Faith McGraw. I love you baby. You are my best friend. My lover. My wife. My shelter in any and every storm. And the sunrise afterwards. Many more sunrises and sunsets. Many more beautiful memories to come”.
McGraw and Hill first met while the former was with Kristine Donahue and Hill had recently gotten divorced from Daniel Hill - a tumultuous backdrop against which you might not assume love was about to be found. Especially given how their love-story was initially perceived as a whirlwind romance, and bearing in mind the inevitable pressures that come with being two of the biggest artists in country music, many commentators at the time assumed their relationship would one day fizzle out.
But hearteningly, at least from our perspective as fans, McGraw and Hill remain as in-love as ever, with the couple having collaborated in recent years both musically and on-screen. In 2021, McGraw and Hill starred in the Yellowstone spin-off, 1883.
And to think, all those years ago, McGraw didn't even think he had a shot. It's a touching love-story, one that will forever be woven into the fabric of country music's vibrant tapestry. We hope it's not too long before we get another joint album in the style of The Rest Of Our Life from these two brilliant songwriters and storytellers.
