Riley Green is the guest on this week's episode of Theo Von's This Past Weekend podcast, where the pair have discussed everything from Riley's new album, That's Just Me, to his ever-developing land ownership.

At the start of the episode, Green and Von reflect on one of the last times they had seen each other, leading to Green's hilarious anecdote on the time that Von showed up to Green's surprise party - without an invitation.

As tends to be the case for artists and personalities, neither Green nor Von were necessarily too aware of what exactly was going on at the party, which seemingly took place at Green's bar, The Duck Blind, located within Loser's in Midtown Nashville.

“I don't think you were invited”, Green playfully replies to Von after being asked if he remembered seeing him there. “I think you came in, got a piece of cake and left”.

“I hated it” Green admits, "I don't like surprises. That was the one time that happened, and it'll never happen again".

After Green teasingly suggests Von came in through the back door and once again insinuates that he left right after picking up some cake, Von goes on to joke, “When we got in there, I was like, ‘Well, s***! If he don't even want to be at a surprise party, then I'm gonna head home’”.

“I thought you planned the whole thing”, Green cracks, leading Von to come back with, “I picked out the cake”.

Where the story at first seems to be a very tongue-in-cheek jab at one another, Green offers a frank part of his true self.

“I just don't need to be surprised to enjoy something. Like for me, I don't get to see my family and friends that often. I'm traveling all the time. So if you gathered everybody, just tell me, and we'll go over there. It's enough that they're there”.

Green goes on to explain how his confusion and dislike for surprises caused him to receive backlash at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2020.

“I give my managers a hard time because I won an ACM Award in 2020. They call me and they're ‘Hey, you need to do a zoom with the label’”.

“I don't have a computer, so I go over to their place and they've got it all set up and there's the president of my label and the vice president and everybody, and I'm like, ‘Alright what we talking about?’

“Then Keith Urban comes on and is like, 'Hey Riley, what you doing August 8th? You wanna come to the ACM Awards?' and I'm like...'Yeah?'.

“My point is, why didn't they just tell me so I could be like, 'Oh surprise!', then there were all these articles about how 'Riley Green won an ACM Award and couldn't care less', because I was just confused.

“I can act surprised, just tell me about it”.

The episode on the whole is an enlightening insight into Riley Green the person as much as the artist, and this light-hearted story goes to show Riley will always tell you how it is.
