Morgan Wallen continues to offer us tidbits from his fourth studio album, I'm the Problem, with the latest unreleased teaser from the Sneedville megastar one of his best yet.
Seemingly titled ‘I'm a Little Crazy’, the introspective track finds Wallen expressing how jaded he feels about the current state of the world, with the ‘Last Night’ chart-topper showcasing his vocal dexterity across a stripped-back instrumental.
Against the cushioning backdrop of a noodling acoustic guitar, Morgan Wallen croons wistfully, “I keep a loaded .44 sitting by the bed/ For the jeepers and the creepers who ain’t right in the head / Hope I never have to use it but you never know these days”.
Fans will notice these opening lines are the same ones that were teased by Morgan Wallen towards the end of February, with Wallen sharing a photo of a notebook featuring these lyrics, alongside a later portion of a verse from ‘I'm a Little Crazy’ (“Throw ‘em out from the start / Go around the horn / 3 up 3 down in the 1st”).
The sinuous hook for ‘I'm a Little Crazy’ is beautifully sparse, with Morgan Wallen introducing the chorus with a haunting set of harmonies, before going on to underline how, despite having a wild side himself, it's nothing compared to the madness we see on the news (“I’m a little crazy but the world’s insane / Oh, once you get to know me / I'm a coyote in a field of wolves / Oh, I'm a red letter rebel / But some become the devil when the moon's full / Yeah the only thing keeping these tracks on the train / Is knowing I'm a little crazy, but the world's insane”).
Judging by the ASCAP entry, it appears ‘I'm a Little Crazy’ was penned by one of Morgan Wallen's closest friends, HARDY, alongside Smith Ahnquist, Hunter Phelps and Jameson Rodgers.
Wallen shared a photo of him in the studio with HARDY on February 24th, and we're hoping the country-rock maverick appears on I'm the Problem as a guest vocalist as well as a writer.
It's possible, of course, that HARDY features on ‘I'm a Little Crazy’. The dark, ominous ambience that pervades this new track certainly lends itself to HARDY's style.
‘I'm a Little Crazy’ seemingly consolidates Morgan Wallen's shift towards a more inward-facing, stripped-back sound for I'm the Problem, with three of the four lead singles, ‘Lies, Lies, Lies’, ’Smile’ and ‘I'm the Problem’, all carrying a similarly intricate feel.
Earlier in March, Morgan Wallen uploaded a clip of a powerful song he's written for his son, Indigo Wilder, who he shares with his former fiancée, KT Smith, titled ‘Superman’. ‘Superman’ also adopts a sparse, brooding atmosphere, and it's looking increasingly likely that I'm the Problem will serve as Wallen's most personal album to date.
In addition to penning ‘Superman’ about Indigo, KT Smith recently implied on Bunnie XO's Dumb Blone Podcast that ‘I'm the Problem’ was written about her. Smith took to TikTok prior to that appearance to jokingly hint at the idea that she was the song's muse.
Either way, ‘I'm a Little Crazy’ has given us more reason - as if we needed any - to look forward to Morgan Wallen's One Thing At A Time follow-up, which is due to arrive this year.
