As Kenny Chesney made the rounds in New York to announce his blockbuster 12-night residency at Las Vegas’ Sphere, the ‘No Shoes Nation’ flag-bearer sat down with Jimmy Fallon to discuss what fans can expect from the unique show, his endearing friendship with Taylor Swift, his touching tribute to Jimmy Buffett and much more.
One particular story that sparked the audience's interest was the tale of how Kenny Chesney's 2024 tour-mate, Megan Moroney, managed to pull off a hilarious prank on the ‘Take Her Home’ hitmaker during their final run of shows at the Gillette Stadium.
During the packed-out triple-header in the unofficial home of No Shoes Nation last August, when the time came for Megan Moroney join Kenny Chesney for ‘She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy’ - which the pair had been duetting throughout the tour - Moroney emerged donning Chesney's signature tank top, blue jeans and cowboy hat.
During his discussion on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Kenny Chesney explained how, as it turns out, those were his actual clothes taken straight from his tour-bus.
The multiple Entertainer of the Year winner fondly recalled, “Well, Megan was out on the road with us all summer...She is fantastic. I mean, she's really great. Speaking of being a great songwriter, great person, and she's really hungry, you know?”
When Fallon presented a photo of the amusing moment, Chesney explained, “We always end our tour [in Foxborough, Massachusetts] - but a member of my road family, Bailey, took her to my bus and she put on my clothes in my bus and came out on-stage dressed as me. So it just goes to show you too, not only is Megan a great songwriter, she's got a really good personality - and isn't scared of anything”.
Elsewhere during the conversation, Kenny Chesney clarified the story Taylor Swift referenced in her TIME Person of the Year article, with Swift outlining how she was removed from Chesney's tour shortly before it started, due to her being too young. Taylor Swift emphasised how gracious and generous Chesney was in the aftermath.
The island-inspired country star took viewers back to 2007, “Yeah, she was a kid...We booked Taylor to go out on the road with us. This was several years ago, obviously. But that summer, my tour was sponsored by a beer company, and they came to us right before the tour started, and said, We can't have a minor on the tour’, which makes sense. But I had to call Taylor personally and tell her she couldn't go on tour with me - which now seems absurd, right? So, I called her, told her she couldn't go on the road, but I said, ‘Look, I feel terrible’, because she was going to lose some money, and I gave her a specific amount of money - it was quite a bit of money - because I wanted to make it up to her, right? And that year, later that year, we were both nominated for CMA Entertainer of the Year”.
Kenny Chesney stressed how incredible this feat was, given Taylor Swift was in her teens, before joking about how he commended her during the CMA Awards ceremony, “That's how hot she was. Well, she won. So backstage, I went up to her and gave her a big hug, and I said, ’Congratulations...but give me my money back!”
When Fallon asked Chesney if he could tell Swift would explode into the global phenom she is today, he responded, “I knew she had something. I knew that she was very driven. I knew that she was a really good songwriter...Nobody knows, really, that a person has the ability to really touch the world like Taylor has, and [bring] a lot of people together...Sports and music bring people together more than anything we have, I truly believe that,” before quipping, “And your show!”
After the interview, Kenny Chesney remarked in an official statement how much he appreciated Jimmy Fallon's interview style, and why he and his team chose The Tonight Show and the TODAY Show as the places to unveil their 2025 Las Vegas Sphere residency.
Kenny Chesney heartwarmingly gushed, “The great thing about Jimmy, is he’s so musically curious, he always takes the conversation places you don’t see coming. Lots of people have asked me about the story Taylor told in TIME, but he wanted to know if I recognized her massive impact when she was 17… Lots of people have asked about the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame performance for Jimmy’s induction, where I sang with James Taylor and Mac McAnally, but he understood what it meant to me on a soul level, and wanted to talk about how much we all miss him”.
Chesney went on to champion the way Fallon brings his own personal interest, “That’s the reason when we made the decision to go into this new dimension with our live experience, I knew I wanted to dig into it with Jimmy Fallon. He not only wanted to understand what the work was to create something that required being built from the ground up, he wanted to know what it feels like to be at one of our shows”.
Kenny Chesney is set to kick off his 2025 Live at Sphere Las Vegas residency on Thursday, May 22nd, with 12 dates lined up until the momentous finale on Saturday, June 14th.
General tickets to the highly anticipated run of shows are on-sale from Friday, Jan. 31 starting at 10 a.m. PT, with fans able to buy passes via Kenny Chesney's official website.
