During his emotional home-state show at Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center, Noah Kahan performed the live debut of a brand new song, speculatively titled, ‘Nothing to Report’.

With this intimate set taking place in Kahan's beloved Vermont, the show already carried extra lustre, but the introduction of this unreleased offering took things up another notch, and was greeted by a sea of screams from the adoring crowd.

It finds Kahan exploring the nostalgic, hometown-inspired territory that pervaded much of his Stick Season era, with the ‘Northern Attitude’ singer-songwriter addressing what appears to be an old flame or a long-gone friend, as he croons, “But it's gone, it's shit without you / It was shit before, but at least I had you / No, there ain't nothing to report / But I hope you're bored and heading north”.

With Kahan confirming in recent weeks that his eagerly anticipated new album is very nearly completed, with just two or so more songs left to finish, it feels like the rollout is picking up pace. The folk titan has been performing unreleased tracks such as ’Deny, Deny, Deny’ and ‘The Great Divide’ regularly on tour this year, with Kahan sharing demos of a handful of other new offerings via socials.

We're wondering whether ‘Nothing to Report’ could be Kahan's long-awaited collaboration with British singer-songwriter, Lewis Capaldi. The duo joined forces on-stage at BST Hyde Park this summer for a spellbinding rendition of ‘Northern Attitude’.

More than a year before this, though, Kahan uploaded an Instagram carousel that featured a tantalising video of him in the studio recording new music alongside Capaldi.

The caption to that post was a lyric from ‘Nothing to Report’, “There ain’t nothing to report, but I hope you’re bored and heading north”. Could this be a clue that this is the song Kahan and Capaldi were working on in the studio back in May 2024?

It remains to be seen. Either way, Kahan's decision to perform this unreleased track in full for the first time surely indicates that the new album is on the horizon, and that we'll have more cosy tunes to soundtrack the colder months before too long.

For the full lyrics so far to Noah Kahan's ‘Nothing to Report’, see below:

“There was a couple of college kids
Who thought the town was dumb as rocks
Like we wouldn't raise an eyebrow
At the sudden lack of bullshit
Too few parking tickets written
Too few high school parties stopped
Well, I always wish you well
When I pass the old gas station
With the banner on the front
That says how tolerant they are
But you'll get told to go to Hell
By some summertime flatlander
With a co-existence sticker on the bumper of their car

-

But it's gone, it's shit without you
It was shit before, but at least I had you
No, there ain't nothing to report
But I hope you're bored and heading north

-

I've been shaking your advice
Trying to scream less at the tourists
I've been working on that last time
When I asked too much of you
But if I see one more Cybertruck
I swear to God I'm gonna floor it
I knew somebody here
Would talk me out of things I can't undo

-

But it's gone, it's shit without you
It was shit before, but at least I had you
Oh, there ain't nothing to report
But I hope you're bored and heading north
But it's gone, it's shit without you
It was shit before, but at least I had you
Oh, there ain't nothing to report
But I hope you're bored and heading north”
