Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs have spent much of 2023 tussling over the top two positions on the Billboard Country Airplay, Billboard Hot Country Songs and Billboard Hot 100 charts.
The duo's dominance over the music world this year has been consolidated by Billboard decision to crown Wallen's ‘Last Night’ and Combs’ ‘Fast Car’ the top two 2023 Songs of the Summer.
Although ‘Fast Car’ is yet to earn Luke Combs his first Hot 100 chart-topper, it has been holding onto second place for a number of frames, and many expect it to triumph in the weeks to come.
Morgan Wallen's beat-driven, One Thing At A Time anthem, however, has spent a staggering 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 - the highest tally for a non-collaboration.
The latest accolade for the ‘Thought You Should Know’ hitmaker comes barely two weeks after Spotify named ‘Last Night’ this year's most-streamed song of the summer.
Luke Combs’ much-loved Tracy Chapman cover, ‘Fast Car’, has cemented country music's occupation of the business end of the charts, with the wistful track currently sitting at No. 2 on the Billboard Country Airplay ranking. Another stand-out from Combs’ 2023 album, Gettin’ Old, ‘Love You Anyway’, is at No. 1, making the North Carolina songsmith the first ever artist to hold onto the top two spots at the same time.
With Wallen and Combs remaining the biggest stars in the modern country landscape, fans are inevitably still clamouring for the two chart titans to release a collaboration. Combs confirmed earlier in the year that he has been talking to Wallen about the possibility of a duet, which we hope will materialise in the next year or so.
Other country offerings to make Billboard's Top 20 Songs of the Summer 2023 include Bailey Zimmerman's ‘Religiously’ (No. 20), Morgan Wallen's ‘Thinkin’ Bout Me’ (No. 18) and Jelly Roll's ‘Need A Favor’ (No. 17), with the rest of the list consisting of tracks from the likes of Taylor Swift, SZA, Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus and more.
