This week, Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs have once again consolidated their status as the two biggest stars in country music.
Wallen's moody, beat-driven anthem, ‘Last Night’, has spent its eleventh week atop the Billboard Hot 100, while Combs’ much-loved Tracy Chapman cover, ‘Fast Car’, has leapt up to No. 3 on the chart.
This marks the first time since the turn of the century that two country songs have settled in the Top 5 of the Hot 100 at the same time. The previous two tracks to achieve this feat were Lonestar's ‘Amazed’ and Faith Hill's ‘Breathe’, which both sat in the Top 5 for eight weeks in 2000.
It's a hugely significant moment for both artists, but Luke Combs enjoys the additional honour of knowing his cover of ‘Fast Car’, which was originally released in 1988, has risen higher than Tracy Chapman's version. Chapman's rendition peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100.
Morgan Wallen's ‘Last Night’ holds firmly onto its top spot on the all-genre chart, while the Sneedville megastar's latest hit also continues its reign atop the Billboard Hot Country Songs ranking for a 19th week. It now matches the remarkable stint enjoyed by Morgan Wallen's infectious 2022 anthem, ‘You Proof’.
In addition, ‘Last Night’ is No. 1 for a seventh week on Billboard's Country Airplay chart. Luke Combs’ ‘Fast Car’ is building momentum, however, and currently looms in Wallen's rearview mirror at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and No. 5 on Country Airplay.
As well as solidifying Morgan Wallen and Luke Combs’ role as country music's primary flag-bearers across the mainstream charts, the fact that the duo are bringing their rivalry to the Hot 100 stage highlights the burgeoning popularity of the genre among today's listeners.
