Aside from the tantalising prospect of seeing some of the biggest artists in country music, the O2's main arena also provides a welcome relief from the chilly, mid-March UK weather that inevitably surrounds the outdoor stages at C2C Festival.
This year, on a particularly cold Saturday night, Australian hitmaker Morgan Evans helped to bring some balmy Byron Bay heat to the O2 stage.
Kicking off his set with a couple of older fan-favourites, ‘Young Again’ and ‘Kiss Somebody’, Evans then launched into his barroom anthem, ‘Sing Along Drink Along’.
Despite the fact that Evans’ divorce from fellow country star, Kelsea Ballerini, continues to be a hot topic on the newsstands, the mood throughout his set was largely one of levity, jubilance and excitement.
One of the only times Evans dropped his wide, beaming smile was for an emotional rendition of ‘Things We Drink To’, which he dedicated to his manager, Rob Potts. Potts tragically passed away in 2017 while Evans was on the cusp of mainstream success.
The other moment that brought a distinct feeling of gravitas and sobriety was when Evans introduced his heart-rending ballad, ‘Over For You’, which he penned shortly after Ballerini announced their divorce.
He movingly outlined that, “At the time when I wrote that song, it felt like the saddest song in the world.
Sometimes it still does”, before delivering the vulnerable ballad and causing around 20,000 people to immediately start reaching for their tissues.
