There was a definite buzz in the air after Drake Milligan’s opening set at London’s C2C Festival.

Jaws were dropping and smacking down hard on the floor as the Fort Worth native gave an electrifying performance on the BBC Radio 2 Stage that left no doubt who was going to be the most talked about artist of the opening day.

Citing George Strait and Elvis Presley – the King of Country and the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll – as his musical heroes, Milligan came out of the blocks with a show that would befit both.

He even included a raucous cover of Presley’s ‘Blue Suede Shoes’ for good measure in a set that also paid tribute to his home state hero Bob Wills.

There may have been no sign of the forecast Beast from the East storm yet this year, but Milligan and his band ripped the roof off the Indigo O2.

Playing songs from his full-length debut album Dallas/Fort Worth, his unique take on traditional country was embraced by a London crowd that spent the rest of the afternoon wondering what had just hit them.
