Seemingly overnight, singer-songwriter Mitchell Ferguson has blown up thanks to a little tune meant as a parody of country music. That farce, however, may have just launched his country music career.
Two weeks ago, 'Drink a Beer' was merely a string of unintelligible words and half of a chorus that Ferguson, a then-little-known artist from Texas, thrust upon social media. With half-hearted mentions of trucks and cold beer, the lyrics were meant as a joke, commenting on the art or lack thereof when it comes to the mainstream country song.
"This is legitimately how most pop country songs are born," the musician captioned his skit.
However, while garbling his words against the scratching strum of an acoustic guitar, what Ferguson likely didn't predict was how much and how quickly the ditty would worm its way into users' ears.
Positive comments began to flood in, with viewers asking for the artist to make it an actual song. "I'd write this song and record it now, guaranteed hit lol," one user wrote, with another demanding, "Don’t change it. Record it. Post it. This is perfection."
Ferguson didn't shy away, leaning into the idea of making 'Drink a Beer' a full-fledged tune.
Over the last couple of days, he's checked in on social media, sharing the life of the song and how it has progressed from parody to cult success. He's even asked new fans to join in and contribute their own lyrics to the number.
Today, the song's opening verse and chorus are inescapable across social media, the once indiscernible mix of sounds now a fleshed out hit about heartache and its liquid remedies.
"Got a truck and a cold beer," Ferguson intones against a simple but assertive strum, "Used to be a bad bitch sitting right here / So I'm going out tonight 'cause when I'm all alone it don't feel right, yeah / Got a little bit of money and a Skoal can / Yeah, I should've got a blessing from her old man / But she walked on out the door / I hope she found what she was looking for..."
He then belts the chorus, singing, "So we gonna take a little trip goin' downtown / yeah, I'm drinkin' you away til they shut it down / I can't forget that you ain't here / So I'll drink a beer."
Already, 'Drink a Beer' has received mainstream radio airplay, and according to Ferguson, mass interest from several major labels. While the viral hit does not yet have a release date, the tune is available to pre-save now.
