Earlier this summer, Mickey Guyton announced - at long last - her debut studio album Remember Her Name. Now, she has shared the first single from the project, which just so happens to be the title track.
"Remember Her Name is a culmination of the last ten years of my life in Nashville,” Guyton said.
"This album is the closing of a chapter. All those years ago, I set out to create music that would make people feel self-empowered, loved and comfortable with being themselves - this album holds true to all of that. I hope everyone who listens finds something that connects and speaks to them."
Guyton's debut album has been a long time coming. Although she's released several singles and two EPs since first breaking onto the Nashville scene in 2011, a full-length album didn't follow.
Guyton struggled with being a black artist in a heavily white genre that didn't know what to do with her talent - or her story.
After trying to conform to country music's image, Guyton had a conversation with her husband that changed her course. "I remember asking, ‘Why do you think country music isn’t working for me?’" she recounted to The New Yorker.
"And he said, "Because you’re running away from everything that makes you different. Why aren’t you writing country songs from the perspective of a Black woman?
Not from the perspective of what you think country music looks like for other people, but what country music is for you?" That just blew my mind”.
Remember Her Name features 15 original songs, including her 2020 hit single 'Black Like Me', and a cover of Beyonce's 'If I Was a Boy'.
