When it was announced that MGK would be performing a special set at the SkyDeck on Broadway at the heart of Nashville, some suspected he may have a country guest up his sleeve.

Few predicted, however, that the reigning CMA and ACM Entertainer of the Year, Lainey Wilson, would emerge during MGK's set for a spellbinding duet of ‘Lonely Road’.

The single - which interpolates John Denver's 1971 hit, ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads’ - serves as MGK's first country single, following his cover of Zach Bryan's ‘Sun to Me’. Originally a collaboration with Jelly Roll, while in Nashville, MGK decided to recruit Jelly's good friend and label-mate to offer a fresh spin on the uptempo track.

Lainey Wilson provides a fascinating perspective on the ‘Lonely Road’ story by taking the helm for the second verse, giving the track a new dimension where it feels as though the two narrators could be the lovers experiencing the same conflict throughout the song, rather than being friends singing about separate, respective relationships.

The Louisiana hitmaker's delivery is on-point as always, with Lainey's signature drawl complementing MGK's more punk-leaning vocal style to create an enchanting blend of textures.

This high-profile link-up in the home of country music adds further fuel to widespread speculation that MGK is following in the footsteps of Beyoncé and Post Malone by readying a debut country album, with ‘Lonely Road’ expected to be the lead single.

Yesterday (Tuesday, September 24th), the ‘I think I'm OKAY’ crooner was confirmed as a performer at the 2024 People's Choice Country Awards, which take place on Thursday, September 26th. It's likely MGK will play ‘Lonely Road’, maybe with some help from Jelly Roll, who has a day off from his Beautifully Broken tour - or perhaps we'll get to hear a brand new track from MGK's rumoured country album.
