Megan Moroney is having one of those years where everything she touches seems to turn to solid country gold. Or in the case of her performance at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, solid country sparkling red.

"I wanted to be dressed as a human red flag - like the guy in the song I'm performing," she told Cosmopolitan magazine before the show, and it was mission accomplished by her along with her stylist Lindsey Dupuis who dressed her in a custom Victoria's Secret two piece and matching sparkly red boots for her performance of 'Man on the Moon' at this year's BBMAs on Thursday night.

"I always have a pretty good idea of what I want to wear [on a red carpet] based on the event or performance," she explained to Cosmo. "But I try not to gravitate toward one style or look. I told Lindsey that I was thinking a red monochromatic sparkle moment, and when I showed up to our fitting, this was a no-brainer."

In a year that's seen Megan mostly sticking to a blue colour palette as she promoted her sophomore album, Am I Okay? it was a suitably Christmassy switch up for the BBMAs which had some fans wondering if the colour way of her next album might be red, following on from the blue of her last album and the green of her debut album, Lucky.

It was a night of big wins was dominated by Taylor Swift on the eve of her 35th birthday, winning 10 trophies that earned her the status of the BBMAs' most decorated artist in the show's 34-year history, having begun in 1990, the year that Taylor celebrated her first birthday.

Megan Moroney was performing as a finalist in the Top Female Country Artist category at this year’s BBMAs, alongside Beyoncé and Lainey Wilson, but it was the COWBOY CARTER singer who walked away with the award on the night.

'Man on the Moon' is taken from Moroney’s 2024 album Am I Okay?, which was No. 2 on Holler's Best Country Albums of 2024, having already reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and the top 10 on the all-genre Billboard 200.

Choosing not to hold the ceremony in one big venue as in previous years, the BBMAs opted instead for most of the performances to be filmed in separate locations while the host Michelle Buteau presented from what appeared to be a small hotel bar.

The 'Tennessee Orange' singer's performance was Carnival Cruise-branded, as she sang 'Man on the Moon' from an intimate outdoor spotlight stage, backed by her band and with a small crowd of super appreciative fans clapping along, and featured among other performances on the night from Coldplay, Linkin Park, Jelly Roll and Shaboozey, who ended the night with three awards, picking up the trophies for Top Country Song, Top Song Sales Artist and Top Selling Song after missing out on Top new artist to Chappell Roan, Top Hot 100 Song to Teddy Swims for 'Lose Control' and Top Streaming Song to Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves for 'I Remember Everything.'

The Billboard Music Awards aired Thursday 12 December on Fox and Fire TV Channels, and on-demand on Paramount+. The leading finalists heading into this year’s BBMAs were Zach Bryan, Taylor Swift, Morgan Wallen and Sabrina Carpenter.
