There seems to be another Luke Combs hit brewing. During the Thursday night (Sept. 19) celebration of his new Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit, titled The Man I Am, the hitmaker presented the unreleased 'Pushin’ Up Daisies'.
Armed with just a guitar, the artist gave a stark yet powerful rendition of the song, one that appears to be about cheating death and not wasting a moment of life thereafter.
"That Trooper said, 'I don't know how you walked away,'" Combs sings of a life-threatening car accident as he strums the delicate tune, "'Boy, you're lucky. This sure could have gone the other way.' / Now, oooooh, all the life I would've missed out on / Kids screaming, 'Daddy's back home', and growing old with their mom / Oooooh, I don't miss my wild and crazy / Out here picking wildflowers for my baby / Instead of pushin' up daisies."
"I wrote this song with [Josh Phillips] and [Randy Montana] sometime last year," he shared on his social media alongside the video clip. "It’s been stuck in my head for sometime now. Might be good, might be bad. I don’t know, but I like it."
Fans seemed to like it too, many of them flocking to the comments, pining for a release date. "Can we have it," one user asked, another writing, "Release it yesterday." When, and if, the song will officially drop is not yet known.
Combs' solo efforts have recently taken a backseat to his high-profile collaborations with Post Malone on the pop star's own country debut, F-1Trillion. This snippet of 'Pushin’ Up Daisies', though, marks some of our first tastes of new music from the hitmaker since his June release of Fathers & Sons, an album that also found him waxing sentimental on life and fatherhood.
This career evolution from party anthem purveyor to country music's beloved family man will likely be mapped in his Country Music Hall of Fame exhibit, The Man I Am set to trace his days from school choir singer to stadium-packing vocalist.
