Kenny Chesney is reflecting on his brand new song, ‘Goldfish’, via No Shoes Radio on SiriusXM, with the ‘No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problem’ hitmaker underlining why this track - which features country prodigy Lily Meola - struck a chord with him.

Penned by Tia Sillers, Tenille Townes and Gordie Sampson, ‘Goldfish’ follows a protagonist who rattles through a Noah's Ark-style list of animals, before confessing that, out of them all, he'd love to be a goldfish, because then he could forget about his ex.

It's a playful, light-hearted offering that carries melancholic textures beneath the surface, and epitomises Chesney's ability to straddle the line between joy and pain so nimbly.

Speaking on No Shoes Radio, the Knoxville native muses, “I know you can hear the waves crashing, because I am right beside them. I'm sitting here with my guitar, and I'm just thinking about Silver Sands Marina, and there's a lot of songs on this record that just makes my heart happy. The song ‘Goldfish’ makes my heart happy”.

It echoes the sentiments Chesney had expressed prior to its release, where he stressed how he loved the concept, “To hear something so creative, something that breaks all the rules and brings back that classic old school wordplay, you want a video that’s just as much fun. Here’s this guy going through so much heartache, sitting in a bar ‘drunk as a skunk,’ but the way the song tells it, it’s so lighthearted you almost don’t realize how much pain he’s in. How do you capture that?”

He went on to tease the music video, which they filmed earlier this month, “And that’s why we decided to do something really carefree, really innocent and just show the spirit of this band, kicking back and having fun together. Between the custom Western suits that’re about that era of country music, the cardboard cut-out of [Chesney's guitarist] Kenny Greenberg who couldn’t make the trip that we dragged around with us and those locations, we matched all the joy this song is made of”.

He concluded, “To me, video should make the song more, take you places and make you feel something even deeper. It’s a chance to take people places they might not get to go, but you always want to make sure you leave plenty of room for their own stories, their own feelings… Kick open their imagination, and let the song fly”.

‘Goldfish’ ensures the anticipation remains high ahead of Chesney's new album, Silver Sands Marina, which arrives on September 25th and will feature Megan Moroney and more.
