Kelsey Waldon recently serenaded us with a trifecta of tunes during her Holler Nashville Session, presented by Montucky Cold Snacks. The Kentucky songstress offered up performances of her 'Peace Alone', ‘The Backwater Blues’ and ‘Tall and Mighty’.
Today, Waldon is a master of the country tune, her homespun croon and earnest songcraft a striking addition to the expansive genre. Her showcase of 'Peace Alone', performed in the belly of Nashville's Riverside Revival, especially offers listeners a stunning example of her musical prowess.
The thumping number from her 2022 album, No Regular Dog, is a sage one, the song providing sharp advice against a classic country-bluegrass soundscape.
"There ain't no money in this world that could fix you," she lilts as she strums her acoustic guitar, "Not if you don't have peace, I know / You can toil all day, worry your life away / But its a hard row to hoe, reap what you sow."
Her stripped-back rendition of 'The Backwater Blues', another of her No Regular Dog offerings, is similarly peppered with the traditional siren's sagacity.
Full of a been-there-done-that kind of insight, the artist sings of overcoming hard days of even harder living with penetrating words like "If I can keep it together 'til the spring / When that damn river runs dry / I'll count my blessings, just like the stars / That are in the sky."
If any song encapsulates Waldon and her career, though, it's 'Tall and Mighty'. While a personal number, the No Regular Dog opus can resonate with us all as it chronicles the high and lows we experience on our pursuit of happiness.
"It's about all the smoke and mirrors, all that good stuff," Waldon introduced the tune before delving into its commiserating message.
"Some days you're gonna feel real fine," she croons, "On top of the world, on cloud nine / Can't nobody touch you when you're after your piece of the pie / Other days you won't feel alright / Other days you wanna break down and cry / Blow up in smoke like some ol' pipeline, like teargas in the sky / You can't stand tall and mighty all the time."
Her third offering, once again, captures her musical acuity and ability to aim straight for the heart.
Kelsey Waldon recorded her Holler Nashville Session, presented by Montucky Cold Snacks, earlier this year, with the videos directed and engineered by Neilson Hubbard and produced by Ross Jones.
