Jelly Roll's live shows have always been emotional affairs, with the ‘Need a Favor’ hitmaker often pausing the music to pay tribute to fans in the audience holding up signs about what they've been through. He's become a beacon of light for many in country music and beyond, as was epitomised by his recent concert at Boots in the Park.
As we see in the newly released vlog from the show, Jelly met a young fan called Hunter backstage before hitting the stage. After chatting about Jelly's roll in the new GOAT movie, Hunter revealed how he'd recently had two heart transplants.
Touchingly, Hunter shared that, seeing as his doctor was named Dr. Stone and he was a big Jelly Roll fan, the nine-year-old asked if they could listen to Jelly's hit song, ‘Heart of Stone’.
Jelly underlined his admiration, “Thank you for making me the soundtrack to your recovery”, with the ‘Save Me’ crooner then performing the track live in honour of Hunter.
During the show, Jelly shared some of Hunter's story to the packed-out audience, “If y'all don't mind, I'm fixing to switch something up on the setlist...It was making me think about people who have gotten through really, really traumatic times and went through real struggles in their life and made it out the other side of it. The survivors”.
He went on, “Made me think about the real warriors, the ones that are willing to fight every single day. I got to meet a cool little dude today, y'all...There's Hunter, y'all. That young man has survived two heart transplants at the age of nine years old”.
Jelly concluded by revealing to his crowd, “The hospital let him leave today in Colorado, his family drove eight hours to be here tonight to see this show. And he asked me to sing a song that wasn't going to be on the setlist...He had a doctor named Dr. Stone that was doing a heart transplant on him. And Dr. Stone said what song do you want to hear, and he said, ‘Well, since you're Dr. Stone and you're working on my heart, can we listen to Jelly Roll's song, ‘Heart of Stone’”.
This generous homage is the latest example of Jelly's dedication to using his platform to spread positivity, and to spread a message of love, redemption and healing that has connected with so many listeners that have been through challenging experiences. ‘Heart of Stone’ appears on Jelly's 2024 album, Beautifully Broken, and we're sure he has an array of inspiring, uplifting anthems up his sleeve for his next project that will serve as more motivation for his loyal listeners.
